@scolgs Wow how exciting is that hope you have a great time out there I know its not here yet but just incase i do not get the chance to say enjoy it I will say it now Sarah
@scolgs Hi Sarah, you'll enjoy Chicago! Millennium Park is right downtown and had a lot of the major photographic views: the fountain, the 'bean,' the Gehry-designed amphitheater, etc, and if you head south toward the Field Museum and Aquarium, you can get some great skyline shots too. Then of course there are the skyscrapers: the Hancock Building, the Sears Tower (I refuse to call it the Willis Tower), etc.
@taffy will probably have even more specifics for you.
Love Chicago. Don't even know where to start with photo ops. One of my favorite shots is looking up the Chicago River (away from Lake Michigan) from Michigan Avenue, (photo above) just at the start of what is called the "Magnificent Mile". Also you have to get to Millennium Park, The "Cloud Gate" sculpture and the fountains with photos of people on them make great photos. Also Grant Parks fountain. If you have time to take one of the Tall Ship tours out unto Lake Michigan (they run from Navy Pier (also a must see) You will get the most spectacular Chicago Skyline shots. There are also Architectural Tour boats that go up the Chicago River from Navy Pier that will give photo opps of some of the most spectacular architecture.
@scolgs Find out where you are staying on a map. Draw a compass line in all directions, and see where most of the locations listed here are located from you. Take a taxi early Saturday, and walk back to your hotel. You will find your way, and find amazing things. Also, go to Grant Park, which is right at Lake Michigan. After your first day, you will start connecting to what and where you want to go. Make sure you look up.....the skyscrapers have amazing views.
I agree with what everyone has said. In addition, I'd add Lincoln Park which has beautiful scenery and includes the zoo. Here's one scene from the inland lake area:

Depending on when you are visiting in October, I'd be glad to meet you in the city.
@archaeofrog Thanks Katie I will certainly make a list of all these @caroleb Thanks Carol great shots @welcometocarolworld@taffy lovely pics I'm there from the 4th October for a week so once I know my itinerary and if those dates work for you I'll be in touch nearer the time :-)
@jyokota@scolgs
Unfortunately, I'll be out of town the 4th - 7th, but you two could have a great walk at that time of night. I teach Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, but would be free Thursday evening (the 12th) if you're still in town Sarah (and maybe you could come down again Junko?). Jim teaches 5 - 8 so I'm free -- we could have a late dinner and have him meet us.
@scolgs Hopefully it will work out with Junko! Enjoy our wonderful city. Last thought -- if the weather isn't great check out museums that may have free evenings. I know the Art Institute's is on Thursday so that won't help, but if the weekend isn't cooperative, it's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Also, @scolgs Sarah, you should look at @danielwsc 's album for his Chicago shots. They are amazing.
I'll have a look at @danielwsc pics thanks again
