Negative and Positive Shadows - Discuss

February 3rd, 2014
Hi 365, I have a question?

I took the photo below yesterday and a few of my friends mentioned that it was a nice shot for todays Fun In Feb word 'shadow'?

I have always thought of a shadow as a negative image of the object? Am I right and could It be that a refection is simply a 'Positive Shadow'?

Please discuss and share your photos of both Negative and Positive Shadows.

Does anyone have a photo of something with both a negative and positive shadow?

Shadows come from blocking a light source and reflections are light being reflected or bouncing off an object. I've never heard of positive and negative shadows except in psychology.

My understanding of shadows and reflections are completely two different things and agree with @kjarn Kathy's explanation

I too think shadows are caused by the absence of light.

Nice shot though

@bulldog

I think the few shadows in this shot are quite insignificant and the 'stars' are the reflections and I think shadows and reflections are quite different.
Nonetheless it's a lovely shot!

I like the idea of positive and negative shadows, especially on water like this:

I agree w distinction between shadow and reflection... And I have similar question to yours as I've had comments about reflections that are shadows and vice versa making me wonder how these things are defined :)
