Now what other social media should I do?

July 29th, 2014
I've had about 10 people in the last week ask me is that like 'Humans of New York'? I had no idea what that was until the fourth person said it so I thought I'd better get informed. You decide for yourself.

I come from journalism and publishing so I know there is NO original idea but 28 days ago I decided to start a new 365 challenge - 365 portraits in B&W with my 50mm telling peoples stories (misschuff was my previous challenge).

Yes I have fb - https://www.facebook.com/SidecarPhotography and https://www.facebook.com/cate.edwards.507 where I sometimes post (feel free to follow and SHARE the links to your fb) with my website having/needing an overhaul sidecarphotography.com.au

NOW I'm getting told to twitter, blog, instagram, tumblr ..... Arrghhh! CONFUSED!

I understand when I post images to fb and ig I surrender copyright and they can do what they want with the images. True/False ???

In your humble opinion how can I garner more online interest in this project? I'll be heading to Japan for four weeks so really need something to ramp up the online presence.

TIA xxxx Carla

Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, subject to the Service's Privacy Policy ( http://instagram.com/legal/terms/)

I can't comment on any site other then Instagram, which I use. I find it's a bit like here the more time you spend liking/commenting on other folks images the more interest you get in your own. Limited space to put lots of written info though. As to selling your soul to them, well for me this site is open to anyone as is most social media. If you put your images on them there is always the risk of what they will be used for or who might steal them. Enjoy Japan

@sidecar Carlita, the place to get most exposure for you and your photos is flickr. I post my 'better' shots from here on flickr (I use the term 'better' rather loosely) and they get lots more views.

I used to be on Twitter but it was too hard. You get feeds from your followers and it all appears in a messy interface. I think twitter has just become a space for people to follow and verbally abuse celebs of various statuses (from minor to major).

I don't know if FB has the same rights as Instagram, but I think you can share a link to your photos on here and on flickr by copy and pasting the BBS code.. That way you are not uploading the pictures to FB just sharing the link (the picture appears on the FB page)

I set up a Phil Howcroft Photography FB page (just somewhere else to showcase my images) a couple of years ago but gave up on it. Maybe I ought to start using it again.

Some of my contacts on flickr use http://www.ipernity.com which seems quite a serious social network for photographers

Hope this info' helps you or maybe it just confuses you more :)

@phil_howcroft I was looking at Ipernity today and set up flickr all those years ago when I needed fill in images for comps and discussion here on 365. As you can see I don't post much on flickr either atm. I suppose I want a one stop shop.

@wearing0 Hi Debi - thanks so much for your response ... I appreciate your feedback. Still not convinced which way to go - a one stop shop is what I'm after I suppose.

@sidecar No one stops available Carlita ! I suppose if you are on many networks it increases your exposure and more people will see your excellent work :) . I suppose you have to find a happy medium where you are not on too many that you've spread yourself about too much ! I also read that if you are on more than one network people recommend you try to keep them a bit different and you don't duplicate postings, but I think that advice is not sensible

Have you tried linkedin. That's a pretty cool network and aimed at professional?

Phil
