Who to Follow

January 24th, 2016
Has anyone else noticed that the Who to Follow link keeps recycling a lot of the same people? I'm wondering if its a glitch in the code or if I'm just checking it when its the same people I saw last time.... I do like the format though...its easy to look thru and see if someones project catches your eye!

I've been trying to get some inspiration there - and DID find the same thing that every time I click: I don't see any new names, just recycled same ones. I was excited about this feature first, but so far, didn't get much out of it.

@vera365 @dianen I look at it periodically... I like how it shows several images of each photogs work... Helps get a sense of what they shoot in general, rather than just a one-off... I've seen a number of different names up there at different times... I assume there is some sort of algorithm that drives the selection?

Seems better to me to do your own perusing of the "current" pages. Or the Popular Page or the Top Twenty. No idea how the subjects are chosen at the link you reference.

@frankhymus I somewhat agree with you, however, I've noticed that the Popular Page and the Top Twenty tend to repeat the same photographers, too. If you have a large following, you tend to make those two pages frequently while others with a smaller following get by-passed even if their photos are outstanding.

@frankhymus @dejongdd so here's the thing... the pop page shows you a great photo that someone did recently... but there's no way to know from that if that photo is indicative of their overall work... the "who to follow" page gives you a bigger sampling... you can tell if someone tends to do lots of street, flowers, architecture, black and white vs. colour, etc...

i also like to look at the curated page... again, no clue how images are selected, but it's less likely to be overrun with pretty bird and sunset shots... not that there's anything wrong with a pretty bird or sunset, but the variety on the curated page is a nice change...

but really... i would never consider any of these "filters" as determinative of anything other than a different grouping of pictures to look at...

and one of the best places to see great new work you might not otherwise come across is the favourite fav of another 365er page :)

@northy I agree. I was just indicating that those pages limit you to a set of repeated photographers like Diane indicated was true with the "Who to Follow" page. I, personally, like the "Who to Follow" feature and visit it regularly.

@dejongdd Perhaps. That's why my first suggestion was look for yourself on the "current" pages. If I see something I like there, a quick click will bring me to that person's project where I can see more. Also, according to Russ, the people with a large following and lots of comments and favs have their current work evaluated by the gremlins with that in mind, so that the popular folks have to do significantly better than their last posts to make it again. Or so the story goes.

well there you go - didn't even notice it existed hahahaha

Yep I've looked at it everyday for the last week and primarily find all the same people on it repeatedly. Also not liking that it only seems to suggest people who already have loads of followers (over 200) so why would they need more attention? But maybe that's just me. :)

I agree, Ive sort of stopped checking it out now.

@dishaparekh176 @dianen @vera365
I check it occasionally but I have found that it depends on the time of day you look at it. Glancing at it now, I see a real mixture of people on there with a range of followers, some under a hundred and some over. When Ross posted a thread about this on Facebook a few weeks back, he indicated that it changes every hour and just cycles through people on the site.

Like others here, I use a mixture of ways to see what people are posting depending on what time I have. I do agree that the TT can be a bit repetitive

What I would like to know is who decides Who to Follow? Do you have to be an ACE member of get more traffic looking at your pictures? At the moment there doesn't seem rhyme or reason why some people are chosen, so to speak and others ignored!
