I have been using Picasa for years. Originally, I used it to send photos, but it has become so much more than a photo sharing tool. I use it to organize my favorite pics and also to edit them.
A couple of weeks ago Google announced that on March 15th, they will no longer support Picasa. My husband just told me this news. I'm in a bit of a panic.
I wanted to throw it out to the community on what platform or program they recommend using that can do the same things as Picasa.
Thanks for the suggestions of lightroom! I'll certainly check it out.
Starting on March 15th Google will simply stop supporting the program. It won't go away, but without support the program could crash with an update to a web browser. That's why I'm looking now (even though I don't want to). I WILL take some cheese with my whine. http://money.cnn.com/2016/02/14/technology/google-picasa/
Am I the only one who loathes Picasa? I know that there's lots that it does do but there are some nasties that it does that I didn't like and caused me a lot of grief.
@dyanstevens I organise my photographs manually (something that Picasa and Lightroom make a right hash of when I have used them) and I edit using DxO Optics Pro and Photoshop
Go Lightroom, would be my advice. But two further points.
ALL of your photo file management needs to be done in Lightroom itself - moving files, folders etc, otherwise, not surprisingly it loses track, and not least because there are sometimes multiple files associated with photographs you aren't aware of. If you go out into the wild world of the OS and do it there, that's where the problems start in my experience. Scott Kelby's books on Lightroom deal with this, and loads of other stuff on LR, brilliantly.
Secondly, and arguably more importantly, get some backup for your files, as they will be local (this includes the catalogue). So try and make it at least a separate disk, preferably in a different location to your computer. You can go to the cloud of course if you have a really good internet connection. You can't go over the top when it comes to backing up.
