English.

How is it that everyone on here speaks English??

We are all from different cultures and backgrounds and things, but everyone writes in English. Personally, I find this weird. Nobody here in England really speaks other languages.. even though we are supposed to learn them in high school, nobody bothers much and the result is that few people actually speak more than one language fluently.

I know that English isn't the native language of all the countries everyone on here comes from.. and yet somehow all I see on the discussions, in comments, photo descriptions etc is English.

Am I just being stupid? Am I missing something? Or are you all very, *very* clever and fluent in a bunch of different languages?

Regrettably I don't have time to be as rambly as I usually am. Apologies especially to @petersonsheri because I know she loves my epic posts.

Also, @jasonbarnette .. Learn English. Properly.

Also also, I usually finish my posts on here with a photo. Usually completely unrelated. I am still not sure why, but it makes me happy. Here is a never-before-seen (except by those of you who have me on Facebook..) photo of me and Greg The Duck. Yay!

The *real* point of this post is about languages. Honestly.
May 8th, 2011
Lol! I was born in America so...It's my first language... XD
I wondered that too though.
May 8th, 2011
hahaha ! i saw that shot on fb and did laugh and showed the kids haha ..... shame u didnt share the "stripper outfit " one ... yes we giggled at that too haha !

i like your random daftness too :D

and as for english ermmmmm either people use a translator , or ermmm theres a man in my pc rapidly translating for us ?

May 8th, 2011
I'm in Alabama, so that's what we speak, unless you count "Southern" as a language...but that would be hard to type in. I'd have to say "Ah live in Alabamer. We speak Amerrican round chere" Haha.
May 8th, 2011
Im polish but i live in Ireland so perfected my school english since im here (well my grammar got seriously bad lol) out of the two languages i find english much easier to communicate.. its way more informal and straightforward..
May 8th, 2011
I used to speak only Greek, until my parents thought moving back to Africa was a good idea. So we did and I started watching Days of our Lives when I was five and that's where I picked up English. Then I started school - English, obv, and Afrikaans was compulsory from 3rd grade... so yeah, had no way to avoid those three.
May 8th, 2011
@flamez Stripper outfit?? :O

I blame Mr @craigdtull for that. I am a Sea Scout leader, so I *have* to wear that. ¬_¬
May 8th, 2011
Nod
30 years ago my parents decided to ship me off to a boarding school in England. After university they let me come back to find a job (in Thailand). My grammar still sucks but, hell, it has been almost 20 years since I got back :-)
May 8th, 2011
I follow several people from the Netherlands and they speak Dutch to each other and I'm lost about what they are saying. I sometimes wonder if I just wrote the same comment as the person before me but I'll not know. I don't see myself learning Dutch anytime soon.
May 8th, 2011
I tried really really hard to speak German because well...I lived in Germany. It didn't work out, though. I could only tell people there was a cat in the kitchen and I didn't even have a cat.

(I really do know a few other phrases other than that but I really was hopeless living there. I'm surprised I'm still alive)
May 8th, 2011
@meggageg THIS MADE ME LOL.

Ohellocapslock.

Erm, yeah. Why was that the only thing you could say?? :/
May 8th, 2011
You teach stripping to sea scouts? Wow, things have changed since my youth...
May 8th, 2011
@craigdtull ¬_¬

Wanna join?
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 It was a phrase I learned in class and the word kuche was really hilarious to mispronounce.
May 8th, 2011
@meggageg Hahaha ok then :D
May 8th, 2011
I'm from Texas and I'd have to agree with @triciaanddazzle that what is spoken down here almost doesn't qualify as English... LOL But yeah, being from the U.S. it's all I know. I picked up a handful of spanish, but not enough to save my life or even be the slightest bit useful. I wish I did know more than just English.
May 8th, 2011
I belong to a website called postcrossing.org. The members are spread all over the world, yet invariably, if you look up a member on the site, besides their own native language, they usually speak several others including English.

And yet, if you look at members from the USA, on that site very few speak a second language fluently. I can speak very poor Spanish, only because I learned it a long time ago in high school. I was never given the opportunity to really practice the language outside of a school room setting.

I would not be so arrogant as to say that English is becoming the "universal language" of the world, but I believe that other countries seem to stress learning a foreign language more so than here, probably because there are so many foreign languages so close at hand. Why many people also speak English as well is beyond me.
May 8th, 2011
I'm French but I have been working for more than 5 years in The Netherlands where I spoke almost only English. Although I make mistakes, especially with the verbs tenses, my English is rather fluent.
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Omg, I just pictured you as a little dark-haired girl speaking Greek, and I melted a little.
May 8th, 2011
@laceyjogautreau I'll do you one better - I had a 'fro. That's right.
May 8th, 2011
@laceyjogautreau Omg, I just pictured you picturing @indiannie_jones as a little dark-haired girl speaking Greek, and I threw up a little.

This is getting soppy.

:P
May 8th, 2011
ARGH! Soppy. :(
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 We get like that.
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I CAN'T COPE WITH IT
May 8th, 2011
Well it's the language of the Internet, so that helps! As does our colonial past...
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 idc ^_^
May 8th, 2011
Although, tbf, that does sound quite cute. But you never heard me say (type) that.
May 8th, 2011
@webfoot It's not arrogant to say English is the "universal language of the world"; it already practically is... Perhaps we should all speak Esperanto!
May 8th, 2011
@vikdaddy I think you are correct, but I can see several other languages, most notably Chinese that could give English a run for its money in the near future.
May 8th, 2011
@laceyjogautreau @katiegc24

The one in the stripes. :| (some things never change)
May 8th, 2011
@webfoot Well you could argue Chinese already has - it's the most spoken language in the World! English is the most spoken second language however...

Chinese will become more popular, but I can't see it giving English a run for its money; as I say, it's the language of the Internet, the 'lingua Franca' (ironically) of Europe and the USA, and emerging economies such as India and China are strengthening in part because they have embraced English (it helps trade relations), particularly the Indians as it's part of our colonial past.
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW that is cute. :D
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 Haha *blush* xD
May 8th, 2011
Just goes to show how lucky you are that one of the big world languages is your mother tongue. And yes, most of the rest of us have to learn one or more of those languages if we want to be able to communicate with the outside world.
(I'm a translator, though, and English is one of my working languages.)
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones I feel like I should join in with all this soppiness now :/
May 8th, 2011
You should! I NOW DECLARE THIS THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING BABY PICTURE THREAD!

:D

Go on... let's see baby Kate! @katiegc24
May 8th, 2011
OH MAN. *blush*

May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones D'oh. Didn't tag you so you can laugh at me sailing.
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 :D Dawwwwwwwwww!
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones :blushmode engaged:
May 8th, 2011
You're a cute little sailing lass
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones I love sailing :D
May 8th, 2011
There are several sites that translate for you so even if someone here didn't speak english they could easily go to a translation site and type in their native language then copy and paste the translation here.
May 8th, 2011
That's seriously rad though - I assume you've been into it for a long time then?

I have the same with Bon Jovi - 4 years old:

May 8th, 2011
@positronicmommy Yes but as far as I am aware they are usually rubbish, and translate word for word, and so don't actually sound very English. :/

@indiannie_jones Oh man that's cute :D Yeah I've been sailing pretty much all my life and now I teach it and do competitions etc.. :D
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 Also, with it being past 1am here, I'm off to bed so I likely won't reply tonight but I genuinely do care so I will tomorrow :) g'night!
May 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 Oh you beat me to it; go you! You teach that?! Very cool - where do you find time to be 18, teach music (I'm not mistaking you with Kit on that one, am I?) AND sailing?! I barely had energy for cartoons at your age, haha.
May 8th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Hahaha ok then XD night :) x
May 8th, 2011
here in the Philippines... English is our second language... we have an English subject from kindergarten til u finish college.. 90% of the books being used at schools are written in English (Math, Science, Arts, etc )

we don't have an accent class though... but yeah... ^__^ hihihihii we have mandarin or french or nihonggo for foereign languages classes but nothing really serios about learning those.. =) well some people care.. i don't hahah it's hard!!! =p
May 9th, 2011
I have one follower that posts all her comments in Portugese (?) I'm just guessing because when I copy and paste her comments into a translator, I only get part of the translation if I use Spanish, so I think next time I'll try Portugese. Anyways, I get the general gist of what she's saying usually, so it's all good:)
May 9th, 2011
well, I have visited 22 countries in my life (most of those just over the past 2 years). I think only 5 of those has English as their official language (or one of their official languages). But almost everywhere I have visited, students take 1 or 2 different foreign language classes (one of those usually being English) from elementary school on up. Some even schools even teach a foreign language the first few years then only teach in the foreign language after that. Basically, you learn the language while in primary then speak nothing but that foreign language while at school.

I think it would be cool if we did something like that in the US.
May 9th, 2011
@viranod If you didn't say you were Thai in your profile write up, I would never have known. Your grammar does not suck!! I know some people who were born and raised in Canada who's grammar, spelling and grasp of the language is not near as good as yours, lol
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones I also just noticed this has been declared English speaking baby thread - and coincidentally I just posted one of me and my Moms for Mother's Day today. How fortuitous! Here's me as a newborn:)
May 9th, 2011
I want to play! I was an English speaking baby, with baby curls and baggy plastic pants over my cloth diaper. lol!!
May 9th, 2011
@lislee75 Yes, we do speak Dutch! Although we do have learned a lot of English, your native language is much easier! I hope you will join us some day ;-)

In The Netherlands we learn English from an age of about 10 years old as a second language. But all the movies, games and tv-series are broadcast in their origionally language with subtitles, so most of the kids know a lot of English a lot earlier. And from the age of 12 we also get German and French in school, or Spanish if you choose that. So yes, we do speak a lot more thatn only Dutch.
For me, I wasn't that great in learning other languages (I blame the system) so I doe speak english, but it's mostly self-told. And when I'm looking for a strange word, the translator is always handy ;-)
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Annie, I never loved you more than I do at this moment. Thank you SO MUCH for bringing out Kate's baby picture!!!

@katiegc24 And Kate, I was born and raised and still live in America, where we speak ENGLISH as our primary language. Just English. I seem to speak it fairly "properly" since people seem to understand what I'm saying.

However, I am also not one of those arrogant Americans who thinks the world should speak English just to make my life easier when I travel. I can also speak German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, and Cantonese. At least, enough to get me around the country, find the bathroom, and order a nice cold beer.
May 9th, 2011
@jasonbarnette wow. All those languages.. Shame none of them is English ;)

Oh No. I forgot I tagged you in this when I posted that photo. @indiannie_jones how could you?!

Mr Barnette.. That photo is on Facebook. I am surprised you haven't seen it already. Embarrassing though, huh? :(
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 Look here...leave Annie out of this. She's is now my favorite person on this project.

And nobody calls me "Mr. Barnette". Nobody. Stop being so damn lazy that you can't even use my first name properly. Damn Brit.
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 But you're precious :3

@jasonbarnette Ain't she precious? :3
May 9th, 2011
@pwallis @petersonsheri Such sweet behbehs :)
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones She's more precious than she'll ever admit.
May 9th, 2011
@jasonbarnette now I am both annoyed and blushy. You guys.... Wtf.

@indiannie_jones stop embarrassing me. As if you haven't done enough with the baby photo thing?!

Hey, Mr Barnette.?
You know something? I *think* I may have just called you by your surname again. Wait.. Yep, pretty sure I did. What are you going to do about it???
May 9th, 2011
I just assumed 365 was like the Tardis and just automatically translated it for us to read, so for someone say from Lolaland they would speak Lola Language.
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones :O *hug*

I blame Mr Barnette. It's all his fault, honestly. Bite me, @jasonbarnette .
May 9th, 2011
@coolgirlsar hahahahaha. That is awesome! I wish it were.. TARDIS 365 project.. man that is the most awesome thing ever. :D
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 :D *hug*
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Just ignore her, Annie. She'll never admit how precious she is...but at least you and I have photographic proof from that cute little baby pic. I think I'll print it ;)

@katiegc24 I am so awesome that I will be able to bite you, shoot a photo of it, and post it on 365 at the same time. Yeah. True story.
May 9th, 2011
@jasonbarnette BRING IT ON, BITCH.

@indiannie_jones I feel like I am being ganged up on :(
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 NO D: *strokes hair*
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 as I happpen to be a robot I have automatic spell check as well as language translation hardwired in my positronic cranium :)
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 Would you like me to bring it in English, or English? Cause apparently you are having a hard time telling the two part slacker.

@indiannie_jones Where's my lovin'? I feel left out here...
May 9th, 2011
@jasonbarnette I'm not a Teletubby; don't just spit the mclovins out.
May 9th, 2011
I started to learn French when I was 11 and continued with it until I left high school. I also began to learn Spanish when I was 13/14 which seemed much easier due to the simialrities between it and French.
I was relatively fluent in both by the time I left school and could switch between the two easily (often meaning to write in one and realising I had automatically written the other!).

Unfortunately with lack of use I have forgotten most of it although if I pick up something written in French or Spanish I can usually translate it to something near the actual meaning.

When I was at university I took a course to learn Welsh and in 6 months whilst not as fluent as I was with French or Spanish I was able to hold up my side of the conversation with the locals who came to the pub I worked in. I knew that they all spoke English too but I enjoyed learning the language and I felt rude not at least trying to learn the language of the country I was in.
Also Wales is a fantastic palce to learn a language as most of the signs/literature are in Welsh and English so it is constantly being reinforced just in daily life.

I hope to move to Italy, it is one of my dreams so each day I am spending some time trying to learn the language. I struggle most learning it on my own as I find speakign the language is the easiest way to learn rather than reading it and repeating it to myself.

My children are almost 3 and 4 years and I am begining to teach them the basics in French, Spanish and Italian in the hope that some of it will stick with them.

I love languages and have been told before I have a natural talent for them, my husband struggles to learn them and he classes himself as a "typical Brit" and unable to speak anything but English (although he learnt French and German at school).

I think the main problem for children in the UK not being able to be as fluent at a second languages than children in other countries is that we don't begin to teach them until secondary school where as I know in other countries second languages are taught from much earlier on.

Sorry I'm rambling on a bit here so I'll stop!
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Awwwwww you are too cute :)

@loztsoul Damn. That is cool.

@jasonbarnette RIGHT, Mr Barnette. Which country do I come from? ENGLAND. What do we speak here? ENGLISH. Who invented this *awesome* language? THE ENGLISH. No, really. Honestly. Surprised? Wow. You are AMERICAN. YOU STOLE OUR LANGUAGE AND NOW CALL IT YOUR OWN. WHY???

This is the most lame thing I have ever heard in the history of all things lame. And that includes you. Yep.

And.... *THAT* is why you aren't getting any of Ms Charalambous' lovin'. Because you are lame.
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 YOU TELL HIM GURLFRAN!

*z-snap*

May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones OH HELL YES!

May 9th, 2011
Haha, I joke, I keed!
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones O_O

Suuuuuure you do. ;)
May 9th, 2011
Like I said, I'm not a Teletubby... sometimes I'm a little mean :p
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones But.. wait.. wut? You aren't a teletubby....? But..... I thought you were! How could you shatter my illusions in this way?!? :"(
May 9th, 2011

May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones That.. is very true.

Sorry. How about Noo-noo though?
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 Yes! As long as I don't ever have to be that stupid baby sun. UGH!
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones That was going to be my next suggestion. ¬_¬

That sun sure is annoying.

I was just about to say.. LOL we are spamming up some poor randomer's thread, who must be getting a ton of email notifications about all this. And then I realised it was mine.

DERP.

This all makes sense.... how???

I will need the explications of the vacuum cleaner commentage.

And.. what if they are girls? I don't like the name Rolf anyways :(
May 9th, 2011
They will all be called Dave Benson Phillips, actually.
May 9th, 2011

May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 :D

I guess it doesn't help that the poor thing will be ginger :[
May 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones True. Seems kinda mean, somehow.
May 9th, 2011
@katiegc24 Haha, it's like some kind of sick joke - procreating with a ginger only to make more gingers.

OMG PRINCESS I'M KIDDING ILYSFM! And Conan O'Brien is like my hero!
May 9th, 2011
@eyebrows HAHAHAHAHA. Wimp.

@indiannie_jones It is, isn't it? Hrm.

@katiegc24 AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! You were squishing cute, too! Sorry, thems just the facts. Barf away.

@eyebrows What's this? You're a ginger?! Your kind intrigues me, and I think you should post a baby picture.
May 9th, 2011
@eyebrows still counts. you have the gingervitis.
May 10th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Days of our Lives!! That's hysterical! Love it. I used to be a General Hospital kind of girl.
May 10th, 2011
I can read Spanish pretty well and understand it spoken reasonably well. Having sentences fly out of my mouth or out of my keyboard is another matter entirely. We learned Mexican Spanish in school and I was in Spain for part of a summer in college. That was an eye opener! "Whaaaaa?????" I loved the "Spanish Spanish!"
May 10th, 2011
@meredithwb Yep! Watched it religiously! Until Marlena was possessed :( that scared me and I started crying the first time they showed that.
May 10th, 2011
English is the Universal Language..and in many places of the world mandatory to learn.
I'm from Germany and learned English when I immegrated watching cartoons.
May 10th, 2011
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
May 10th, 2011
@indiannie_jones @katiegc24 Kate's asleep. I can have fun now. Who's still awake and wants to help?
May 10th, 2011
this thread is out of control! I'm 365ing from ecuador, surrounded by español, but american so I speak Amurrican.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette bahah this sounds evil and fun.
May 10th, 2011
I thought about that too just the other day...strange right?
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg I am both. Wanna join?
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette most definitely
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Oh, good times. I like have accomplices. Do you know @katiegc24 cause she's the target for our evil fun ;)
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Well, I do follow the adventures of Greg. In that sense I guess I do know her. Hah :p
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Well, Greg can go duck himself tonight, cause we're focusing on the extreme slackerness of that crazy Brit.

She actually thinks the English language is hers. And I need an army of English-speaking, gun-toting Americans to silence her. Since I don't have a gun, and can't shoot across that pond, we'll use words to take her down.

Up for it?
May 10th, 2011
Kate! With Greg! I can only imagine what Greg is saying.

And @eyebrows is a ginger? Love gingers!
May 10th, 2011
@lolanae Greg is probably saying Duck My Life
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette I do own a gun but I do not have the ability to shoot across the pond. So, words it is!
May 10th, 2011
Oh and I don't shoot people or ducks. I just shoot targets. BTW
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg We'll have to be careful what words we use. She speaks English, but it's not really English. I think a lot of what I say to her gets lost in the translation.

Oh...did you know "phone" is a verb over there? They say "Hey, phone me." Weird people. And they say properly a lot, like "Hey, did you fall in the river properly." Like there is a way to fall in IMproperly. I think if you fall into a river improperly, you're probably so dumb you miss the water altogether.
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Oh, and I think we should tag @katiegc24 in every single message so when she wakes up in about 2 hours, she'll have about a billion notifications.

Just a suggestion...
May 10th, 2011
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Greg won't get it.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette She @katiegc24 will feel very loved. Hope her fingers don't get tired deleting all of these if they go to her email!
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg LMAO! I forgot about that. I have the email notifications turned off, but I don't know if @katiegc24 does or not.

Either way...it's still fun. What other kinds of mischief can we cause?
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette You are the evil mastermind. I'm just an Igor ready and waiting to push the button on @katiegc24.

oh, and my emails are turned on. If hers are I know how how time consuming deleting can be.
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Sweet! That way, @katiegc24 might not have time to read messages other annoying Americans have been sending her.

I like that you are my Igor. I've always wanted an assistant! "Igor...LIGHTS!" I could get used to this.

Oh...you're from Kentucky? I'm in Virginia. We could totally form a war party now.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette We can have a 'cuppa' while we rage on. I'm sure @katiegc24 has 'cuppas'. I just call it drinking tea but whatev and it is usually sweet and ice cold.
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg What the hell is a "cuppa"? Sounds like something someone from Jersey would say. "Hey, did ya cuppa?"

Hey...I kinda like your photographicity. Don't know that word? Yeah, I didn't know it the first time @katiegc24 used it, either.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette 'Bloody' hell. Is that a real word?! @katiegc24 is just making stuff up.
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Yeah, and don't even get me started with colour. What the hell is a colour? Look at that! My MacBook Pro, you know like the best laptop in the world, just underlined colour in red cause the spellchecker says it is wrong.

@katiegc24 What do you think about them ducks?
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Yeah, what is with the extra U's in words? These people be crwazy.

@katiegc24 the mighty ducks
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Shoot. That wasn't good English. I fail. Not as much as @katiegc24 fails at her 'english', though. :p
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg Oh damn! Cute little Meagan from Kentucky just gave @katiegc24 the biggest international bitch slap I've ever seen.

I should've sold tickets to this dance.
May 10th, 2011

No wonder the English language is so very difficult to learn.
I sometimes wonder how we manage to communicate at all!

We'll begin with a box and the plural is boxes.
But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.

The one fowl is a goose but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may found a lone mouse or a whole set of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

If I speak of a foot and you show me your feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why should not the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural wouldn't be hose.
And the plural of cat is cats and not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say Mother, we never say Methren,

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine she, shis and shim,

So English, I fancy you will all agree,
Is the funniest language you ever did see.
May 10th, 2011
There is no egg in eggplant or ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple...
Is cheese the plural of choose?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
In what language do people recite at a play, and play at a recital?
Ship by truck, and send cargo by ship?
Have noses that run and feet that smell?
Park on driveways and drive on parkways?
Sweetmeats are candies, while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce, and hammers don't ham?
One index, two indices?
How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another?
When a house burns up, it burns down.
You fill in a form by filling it out, and an alarm clock goes off by going on.
When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it?
.English muffins were not invented in England or French fries in France.
How can 'slim chance and a fat chance' be the same, while ' wise man and a wise guy' are opposites?
May 10th, 2011
@rrt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg @jasonbarnette

WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO TO ME?????

I wake up this morning.. 28 emails and 32 notifications.

Mr Barnette, is this to make up for your phone exploding yesterday? Cause if so, I don't really think you have got there yet. This was just.. a tiny bit annoying, and mostly funny. So..... NOT WORKING. :D

The tagging thing was pointless - I started this discussion so I get notifications every time someone writes in it anyway.

Ms Leigh - Why are you believing everything he says? He's just this *really* annoying American who enjoys picking on teenage girls. What does that say about him?!

And anyway, who else invented English, but *the English* ???

Lol.

You guys make me laugh.
May 10th, 2011
@katiegc24 Oh gosh. If you are awake already that means I should be sleeping!
May 10th, 2011
@meggageg YES I AM AWAKE.

GOTOBED.

You're even behind me in time. Just accept that my English wins.

May 10th, 2011
@pankaj And so it goes on Pankaj. Brilliant entry to this discussion. Copied and pasted for later use. Who wrote that - you?
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj I'm with Miranda. Did you write it?
May 10th, 2011
@miranda @scatcat NO NO, I did not write, these and many more are so much fun here in India when people talk of English....
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj Great fun.
May 10th, 2011
@allegresse you were on a forum about Harry Potter? Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ;)

@katiegc24 You are right, we English invented English and the Americans just ruined it with their weird spellin and everting...like 'color'.....

*runs away from thread and turns off email notifications*

:)
May 10th, 2011
...before I go...I love your photo Katie....hope Greg doesnt suffer from vertigo!
May 10th, 2011
@allegresse why why why why why why why would you do that to me?

What is the issue here with me being a Brit? :O

I think you are just jealous, actually.
May 10th, 2011
@katiegc24 Ha ha! No, I love Brits. I was just going off of @jasonbarnette and @meggageg

Good night! ;-)
May 10th, 2011
@looseimages Harry Potter is the coolest thing ever. You know it.
May 10th, 2011
@allegresse Harry Potter is actually awesome. even @jasonbarnette agrees there.

I am glad to hear you love Brits.. We are awesome, after all :P

Good night?! where do you live??? O_O
May 10th, 2011
@katiegc24 California. But I did my "Study Abroad" in London. Lived on Cromwell Road for 4 months. I think one of the reasons I have insomnia is that half of me is still on London time -- that or I need to stop drinking coffee. =)
May 10th, 2011
@allegresse true HP is awesome....and written by a Brit. LOL. Sleep well :)
May 10th, 2011
The most common first language on the planet is Mandarin Chinese but the most common second language is English. English is the common language of the planet.

If you learn French you can speak to 265 million people
Learn English and you can speak to 1.8 billion people

I teach Spanish people to speak English because they want to use it to communicate with other europeans, not just English speakers.
May 10th, 2011
Los que hablamos otros idiomas, utilizamos el inglés porque si no, pues nos quedamos hablando solos. Nos limitamos en nuestras comunicaciones a un pequeño porcentaje de usuarios.

But if we use English, we can interact freely with just about everyone. :-D
May 10th, 2011
@katiegc24 @indiannie_jones Well, I wake up with only two notifications on 365 cause people don't tag me in every single post. I kinda like it like that.

However, I just thought put the brakes on this discussion by using my English to say that Kate is the most beautiful woman I know, and every time I see her cute face it takes my breath away just like this waterfall did the first time I saw it.

By the way, when I posted this photo last this past weekend, I named it Kate Falls after this beautiful British woman, and even though we speak different varieties of the same English language, I would have to be blind, deaf, and mute before I'd ever want to stop talking with her.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette you said I would blush and I totally am. But I really don't want to stop talking with you.. So it's OK, as long as you are not blind, deaf and mute. But even then I would find a way to talk with you. Really I would. I love that photo :D it is completely adorable that you called it after me :* I don't really care whose English you speak, cause you're amazing just how you are.
May 10th, 2011
DAWWWWWWWW Kate and Jason sitting in a tree, making out.
May 10th, 2011
@indiannie_jones No no Annie...Kate and Jason sitting in the back of my Explorer on the beach with strawberries listening to the waves...get it right ;)

@katiegc24 Us not talking...never gonna happen. I'd learn a new language for you.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Whatever floats your boat (she's a sailor, remember) :D
May 10th, 2011
@indiannie_jones I can't swim.
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette { vision of Kate saving you, in a Baywatch-esque manner }
May 10th, 2011
@indiannie_jones hell yes I would!
May 10th, 2011

May 10th, 2011
@eyebrows you know I ♥ U!!
May 10th, 2011
Hebrew if my mother tongue and the language I can express myself freely and well but we learn English in school from the age of 8 (and some other languages as well. ) English is a universal language for us: most professional books are in English, communications in research programs at the universities are in English, Signs in the streets are written most of the time in English along with Hebrew and Arabic etc. But i it a kind of challenge for me to write here in English. I have many spelling and typing mistakes for instance and although being dystrophic I have them in Hebrew as well, I cannot get the help of an editor here.
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj great. I will copy and send to some friends.
May 10th, 2011
@katiegc24 If I'm not speaking English...how can you understand me when I say rawr?
May 10th, 2011
@eyebrows FOR THE RECORD, I ADORE THE GINGERS.

@jasonbarnette @katiegc24 I really need for you two to be a couple now, there is too much cuteness going on. And @eyebrows @indiannie_jones , You two having ginger babies would also be the cuteness. I will be the nanny, omg a ginger baby!! That is all, goodnight.
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj Ha ha hilarious! Love these... slash copy for future use. Thanks for sharing!
May 10th, 2011
@jasonbarnette WOW!! impressive!!! if ever u speak to me in of those languages, except for english, i'd die... hahhaha

@pankaj

FUNNY!!!! copied it hahahha FACEBOOK STATUS! lol
May 10th, 2011
@laceyjogautreau The 5000 mile distance between us is making that kind of hard right now.. but I will endeavour to fulfil your wishes as soon as it is possible.
May 10th, 2011
@amyhughes I had to read that about 14 times before I got it. But.. LOL!

You just publicly bitchslapped Mr @eyebrows good and proper. ^5
May 10th, 2011

@meggageg Hands off; they're mine.

English Pronunciation

Dearest creature in creation,
Studying English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
It will keep you, Susy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh, hear my prayer.
Pray console your loving poet,
Make my coat look new, dear, sew it.
Just compare heart, beard and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Made has not the sound of bade,
Say - said, pay - paid, laid, but plaid.
Now I durely will not plague you
With such words as vague and ague,
But be careful how you speak,
Say break, steak, but bleak and streak.
Previous, precious; fuchsia, via;
Pipe, snipe, recipe and choir;
Cloven, oven; how and low;

Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like would and should.
Banquet is not nearly parquet,
Which is said to rhyme with "darky",
Viscous, viscount; Load and broad;
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation's OK
When you say correctly croquet;
Rounded, wounded; grieve and sieve;
Friend and fiend; alive and live;
Liberty, library, heave and heaven;
Rachel, ache, moustache; eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed;
People, leopard; towed but vowed.

Timber, climber; bullion, lion;
Worm and storm; chaise, chaos, chair;
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Ivy, privy; famous; clamour

Sever is right, but so is even;
Hyphen, roughen, nephew, Stephen;
Monkey, donkey; clerk and jerk;
Asp, grasp, wasp; and cork and work.
Pronunciation - think of Psyche -
Is a paling, stout and spiky,
Won't it make you lose your wits,
Writing "groats" and saying "grits".
It's a dark abyss, or tunnel,
Strewn with stones, like rowlock, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.
Don't you think so, reader, rather
Saying lather, bather, father?
Finally: which rhymes with "enough"
Though, through, plough, cough, hough, or tough?
Hiccough has the sound of "cup".
My advice is, give it up!
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj Oh wow. That is AWESOME! Where did you get that from??? :O :O Love it!
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj Thank you so much. What a treasure of English language fun. I enjoy it so much.

Mysteries of Anatomy

Where can a man buy a cap for his knee,
Or the key to a lock of his hair?
Can his eyes be called an academy
Because there are pupils there?
Is the crown of your head where jewels are found?
Who travels the bridge of your nose?
If you wanted to shingle the roof of your mouth,
Would you use the nails on your toes?
Can you sit in the shade of the palm of your hand,
Or beat on the drum of your ear?
Can the calf in your leg eat the corn off your toe?
Then why not grow corn on the ear?
Can the crook in your elbow be sent to jail?
If so, just what did he do?
How can you sharpen your shoulder blades?
I'll be darned if I know - do you?

@laceyjogautreau Yeah, the distance is a bummer. But trust me...I'd walk across 5,000 miles of glass barefoot to make her smile for only a few moments.

@maceugenio Like seriously die? Unfortunately, Cantonese is not a phonetic language, so I can't type it here. Want some Spanish? German? I'd be happy to kill you!

I'm living in the Czech Republic, and in almost every school, you have the learn english, and then you can choose between spanish/deutch.
But well, you're right, it's really weird that everyone can speek ( at least a little bit) this language.
May 10th, 2011
My native language is German, but I guess English has become my second language by now. I learned the basics at school, and got a lot of practice on the internet later. I figure it's indeed some kind of universal language meanwhile which is a good thing because that way, we can talk to so many people worldwide - something that would never have been possible in the pre-internet era. I love that!
May 10th, 2011
@pankaj Brilliant...thanks for sharing!

Also...

cough - pronounced like coff
bough - pronounced like bow
tough - pronounced like tuff
through - pronounced like thru
though - pronounced like ho

And my town of birth...Loughborough, pronounced like Luffburra!

Go figure! :)

And to finish, a surreal moment in the office a few years ago when two colleagues of mine were chattering away to each other, a German who spoke little French, a French guy who spoke little German, getting on in fine style in English. Humbling.

Cam
Brits seem to have a mental block about learning other languages. I personally think it's because languages are easier to learn if you start young. Other cultures see speaking English as key to a good education and start early. The result is that lots of non-native English users make more sense online than many Brits!

These days there's no excuse for barriers, browsers will translate many languages. I follow some German posts on here and have some FB friends that post in other languages (Spanish I can manage, Indonesian not!)
