Sooooo... @abhijit won technique challenge #22 with a brilliant refraction shot and now it's his turn to host. As he is currently travelling, he's asked me to set the challenge up for him - he has chosen the technique of selective colouring.
Selective colouring is when you take a colour photo, and convert it to black and white, leaving only one or some selected portions in colour. The result is that the bit left in colour really pops! Often photogs will pick just one colour to "pop", and very often that colour is red, but any colour will do, and you can have more than one.
The technique is relatively easy to master, although you will need post processing software. You can use GIMP, lightroom, photoshop (elements or the full monty). And there are likely other bits of software out there that will work as well. Here are some tutorials to help you get started:
Selective colouring draws the eye, and makes the viewer focus on a particular aspect of a photo and it can be used to create moody iconic shots. Here are a couple examples of selective colouring.

This challenge will run from today, March 29th thru to Saturday April 12th... hopefully @abhijit will be back by then to choose the finalists for voting :)
Many cameras, the Nikon DSLRs I do know about, have in-camera processing on the "retouch" menus. Selective color effects are usually there, if you don't use an editor.
I have done so few SC shots. I did one or two early on in the project. It is so hard to do it "effectively" that I guess I got scared off of it. I will see if I can find a good use for SC and do this!

@northy I will definitely have a go at this. I gave wanted to try and learn this for ages and never got myself sorted!
