Photographer arrested for trespassing!

Just read this story about a photographer and models sneaking into an empty house for a photo shoot! I don't do this kind of photography, but I'm curious as to the procedure for getting permission. If you do location shoots, how do you go about finding out who owns the property and getting permission?

In most states in the US, you can check the Tax Assessor's records online. That should tell you the current owner of a property. If it's not online, you could get the info from the local Town Hall.

@kannafoot I agree. What has me laughing is the irony of how hideous her mug shot is!They should have let her do a selfie!

She was asking for trouble. Quite inexcusable behaviour! I took a few risks during a long newspaper career, but only if it was "in the pubic interest" to publish what was going on, not to use somebody's property as a studio without permission or payment.

I wonder how she would feel if someone broke into her studio and used her equipment without permission for a photo shoot? This was just ridiculous stupidity on her part. Look at the neighborhood. It hardly looks like people abandon houses there!

Shouldn't have looked at her photos before going to bed...good but freaky scary!!! Oh, as far as the getting arrested...serves her right! Seriously?! Who does that?

In the US many, if not most, counties have a GIS system online that you could use to get info on a property. Sometimes a bit confusing to use, but easier once you have the hang of it.

If I think there is a good chance of being caught - lots of neighbours etc - then I ask them who owns the property. If nobody knows I let them know that I want to go over the fence and take some photos. If nobody is likely to see me then I just go. If it's a place with street people living in it then I respectfully ask them if they would show me around and give me some background on the place.
Clearly the home that this woman went in to was not abandoned and she should have been arrested and charged. Even what I do is not right. I can see some property owners being concerned that I might sue them if I get hurt because part of the roof falls in or what ever. I figure if I go in there and something happens to me its MY fault
