"There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever." Henri Cartier-Bresson
Henri Cartier-Bresson - HCB - was born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France 22 August 1908 and died of natural causes 3 August 2004. He is considered to be the father of street and candid photography and was a founding member of the famous photo agency Magnum Photo. He is perhaps best known for his philosophy of the 'Decisive Moment' in photography, described in his own words in the quote above.
HCB trained as a painter but found his true artistic direction when he acquired an early Leica camera with 50mm lens and most of his work was shot on Leica cameras and 35mm B&W film.
This challenge will run from Saturday June 6th to Saturday June 20th - all
Images must be taken within this time frame but you can enter as many as you like. (For those who may not have come across the Artist Challenge before - the challenge is to create an image in the style of the artist - in this case, Henri Cartier-Bresson.)
Thanks to Hope Jennings @mzzhope for hosting the last challenge and to all of you who voted ... especially those of you who voted my image into first place ;-)
Have fun and good luck in finding that elusive Decisive Moment that makes an image come alive!
Terrific quote that really says it all for someone shooting in film, especially. So many of his images are familiar to me. He was great with portraits, wasn't he! Should be quite a challenge! Thanks, Richard. :)
Fantastic choice Richard, he is one of my favourite photographers. Not sure I could ever capture his style or get the decisive moment though. Will have a think and maybe give it a go.
The Art Institute of Chicago had an exhibition featuring his works a few years back. I was completely fascinated. I have the exhibit guide on my shelf.
I thought I should join in too, so here's my first attempt at HCB's Decisive Moment to encourage you all - you can read the story behind this image here: http://365project.org/vignouse/365/2015-06-06
@annied It's a nice enough image, but is it HCB? I don't know Annie but as a B&W film photographer he didn't have quite the same post-processing capabilities as we do. What do others think?
I know HCB didn't 'do' sepia but I was trying for the decisive moment here with the sun behind the man. Thoughts?
