Breaking All the Rules Challenge

October 30th, 2011
Alright this is a competition for all you bad boys and girls. Each time we will break one of the many "rules" of photography. Best picture wins with bonus style points for breaking the rule in spectacular fashion.

Here are three websites with all their rules.

This time we are breaking the vaunted Rule of Thirds. This rule maintains that if you broke up your picture into 9 sections with two imaginary equidistant horizontal lines and two equidistant vertical lines, you should place your main subject on the intersection of two of these lines. For pictures and more info on the Rule of Thirds see the link below.

Deadline is two weeks from tomorrow, November 14th. I will choose five finalists and put them up for a vote. To be considered as a finalist the shot has to have been made between October 31st and November 14th. Remember to tag your entry as "Breaking- the-rules"

In the mean time feel free to show off your previous pictures that breaks this rule, right here in this discussion thread.

Come on everybody, let's walk on the dark side together. You know you want to do it.

Is the competition judged by how well the rule is broken or by how good the photo is (as long as it breaks the rule)?

@axel Picture first. Bonus points for breaking the rule in spectacular fashion.

This is an interesting thread as long as we remember that there are no 'rules', just guidelines based on and modified by experience and personal taste. Every exposure is legitimate, capturing a moment in time as interpreted by the artist, but just as in all other forms of art, some viewers may hate it while others may conspire to make it famous. Photography is a great medium for self expression or recording history, and as many of the images here demonstrate, the best place for the 'rule book' is out the window.

@wordpixman Arthur. There are two reason that I like this challenge. First you have to learn the rule before you break it and second it teaches rules should not control your photography.

I'd like to know what rule the photographer feels he broke. Some I just don't see what it is. It would certainly help me.

@mackena Each time we run this challenge we will be breaking a different rule. This time we are breaking the Rule of Thirds. More info here http://www.digital-photography-school.com/rule-of-thirds

@smapp I think it's a great idea. Although I think reading the instructions should be made a rule :)
November 14th, 2011
@lluniau Funny, I am a teacher though and pretty used to repeating instructions. It's all good.

@smapp So will all those who don't break the right rule be given detention? :)
November 15th, 2011
@lluniau I prefer the "mean face" method.
November 15th, 2011
@smapp haha! I like that method - I just do the stare down!
November 15th, 2011
@smapp @lluniau Thanks - though I feel like a fool now. Of course I should have read the rules - it makes way more sense!! That's me speeding through these posts as quick as I can to see as many as I can, but obviously doing it half-assed.

@mackena I know EXACTly what you mean! I got sucked into 365 when I wasn't well and had all the time in the world to comment and do challenges. Now I'm back to normal, working, gymming, swimming and generally just living (not that I'm complaining!) I'm REALLY struggling to keep up with taking photos nevermind commenting and reading!
I'm sorry if I upset you, I was just in a bit of a funny mood, that's all x
