Photography Book Recommendation

May 3rd, 2013
Hi All,

My husband is fishing for Mother's Day gift ideas and I would love to have a book on Black and White photography or Nature photography. Amazon.com has several to choose from. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

You can't go wrong with anything on Ansel Adams. This is the one I have:

I'm with @russianblue , Ansel Adams is a great choice. I love my copy of "400 Photographs."

Do you want a 'how to' or a coffee table book?

@edie I am looking for a "how to". I am interested in the Examples Making Photographs book mentioned earlier. I am also taking a look at this one:

Any advice would be appreciated!

That one looks amazing actually. I don't know the author but I'm not really well versed in who is who. I have a couple of books and I like Scott Kelby. I tried to search and see if he has one specifically geared towards black and white but I got too many hits and I have to go pick up my daughter from school. I'd say check him out but I really think the one you posted looks great. (which, of course, means I am judging a book by it's cover...)

@edie @russianblue @grizzlysghost Thank you for your suggestions. I have put in my requests with the husband: Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs & Creative Black and White: Digital Photography Tips and Techniques. Hoping to post some amazing black and whites after a while.

I realize you're looking for a "how to" book, but you should also consider something - anything - by the naturalist John Muir. He wasn't a photographer but his descriptions of the wilderness he encountered are so vivid that you can't help but "see" nature better after reading his stuff.

Hi, I have found books by Michael Freeman are very good. Plenty of photos to show you what he means. Also you can get them from other book suppliers at a reseanabke price( that is UK prices). Hope this helps

Try "the practice of contemplative photography" very thought provoking about how and why we take a picture
