Daguerrotype style

June 5th, 2013
Photoshop types, I could use some help! I am trying to replicate the style of photographs from the mid 1860s as part of my 'get pushed' challenge this week. I've got an OK handle on sepia but am coming up empty at a reasonably easy way to get the edge wear / chemical staining style. What is complicating the matter is that it is a rather low key image, so the already black background isn't amenable to a standard vignette. Is there any way to create a vignette in another color (sepia)? Am open to any and all suggestions. I have CS5.

I did a colored vignette a few days ago in GIMP. Made a layer mask, colored it, made the middle black so the image would show through, blurred the edges and played with the opacity.

Daguerrotyes are as broad in their look as colour or regular black and white and it depends what look you are trying to achieve as to what background you use this is one of mine from my History of photography month back in 2011

for this I used a large black brush and created an edge around the whole image on a seperate layer I blurred the layer by about 30% and used the opacity settings to get the look I was after then put the whole thing in a worn looking frame quite simple but I find layers is definitely the way to go

Here it is:

You could put some spots and stuff on that layer and make it look more worn

if you wanted quick, whatever look i know in picmonkey theres a daguerrotype effect you can apply

I just have elements, so I don't know if it's the same, but here's what I do.
Use the marquis tool and select, adjust feather here, then inverse. Choose a color fill layer and adjust opacity. Any color you want.

@m9f9l I love this pic! Try picmonkey.com for daugerrotype effect

@k1w1 I've been looking but haven't found anything close.

@btorrey @tbats22 Picmonkey's daguerreotype style is part of their package you have to pay for. I tried using it buy didn't have much effect on black, and I couldn't save it.

Try Ipiccy. They have daguerreotype style and it's free. I tend to use it and then desaturaute it so it takes out the sepia tone to make it a bit more black and white like. Maybe I convert to black and white first tho. Can't remember, I just play with it until I get what I like.

Hey lady, I did find that as an ACE member you can use the upgrades on picmonkey and edit once the photo is posted. I think that all of the features are free. Also, GIMP has an "old photo" setting that may give it the effect that you are looking for. It makes it sepia, gives it a blur and makes the edges fuzzy.

Once you post your image, use your ace membership picmonkey. It has daguerreotype styles and you can save it from there.

I have also found a few overlays that you can use. My email address is in my profile if you would like to email me then I can send them to you.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. Here's my effort (details below):

The original image is here: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/1996.99.2 , and my SOOC file is here: http://365project.org/archaeofrog/extras/2013-06-04.

Due to the black background, I really couldn't get the 'daguerreotype' style to work in either Picmonkey or iPiccy, but thanks for the tips about each!

My final effort involved: in iPiccy, I changed it into black and white, added sepia (but faded it out), and used their 'soften image' to imitate the soft focus. Then, in Photoshop, I created a tan-ish layer, cut out the vignette shape with an ellipse, added some blur, and changed the opacity, and then I did the same with a layer of 'metallic texture.' Finally I added a few thin lines in the same color and faded them out.

Would love feedback and further suggestions!

Oh!!.... I just had an idea! Do any of those sites have invert? You could invert and then do a vignette and then invert back :-)
