Camera Help

August 13th, 2013
I started off 365 with my old standard camera which unfortunately died in a storm in Ghana.
Since then, I've been using the camera on my phone which, although good, isn't amazing.
I'm ready to take photography further as a hobby and really get involved, but to do that I'll need a half decent camera.
As an amateur, I have no idea about any of it; make, model, size, lenses - I don't know where to begin!
If any of you would like to impart words of wisdom or opinions I would be very grateful!
Thanks in advance,
Ellie xx

It can depend on the amount you want to spend.

I will suggest three manufactures to look at--Sony, Panasonic, and Olympus. These three are pushing photo technology to new levels.

I agree with @cookie123 you need to have a budget first...then work from there....I would suggest a visit to a camera store to see which camera fits your hand well and which features you particularly like. Me, I am a Canon girl though and through, but I have friends with Nikons and Sonys and they love theirs too!

what the others said... also depends on what kind of photography you are interested in and how much of a commitment you want to make...

In addition to what everyone above said, one thing important to understand if you are going to buy a DSLR and begin to collect interchangeable lenses -- you are really committing to the line of lenses you are buying, more than the camera body.

Look and think about the budget you have firstly. Also you could look at camera on 365 and that will give you a good idea. If you can visit your local store and perhaps a local professional. Most of all enjoy

If you click on browse and cameras there is a list of the 50 most popular cameras used by 365ers over the last 30 days, with a link to Amazon from each so you can get an idea of price.

@ellie32 Yes, you definitely need to think budget, not just for the camera but, if you're intending to get one with interchangeable lenses, the cost of the lenses. I thought when I bought my DSLR that I'd be quite content with the kit lens - but like many others on here, I found very quickly that I wanted to add other kinds of lenses. In fact, I wish I'd known much more about lenses in the first place, and just bought a camera body without kit lens.

Thank you everyone for your help. I didn't realise about the Popular Cameras area on 365 so I will have a look and browse some shops, thank you. The interchangeable lenses are something to look at too, thank you for your advice :)
