Carrying Cameras

March 29th, 2011
I notice that a lot of people seem to actually take their camera with them wherever they go. As much as I would love to do this, I work at a place where I am always on my feet and can't keep an eye on my stuff and where we are warned not to leave anything valuable in our car because of break-ins. So in the end I leave my camera at home and always find myself photographing the same things about and around my house.

So I was just wondering, how do you guys manage to carry your cameras around with you and what do you do when you feel uninspired by the things that surround you everyday?
March 29th, 2011
Oh I'd love to see replies about this. Been wondering the same thing!
March 29th, 2011
I lived in san francisco for over 15years so kind of find it amazing when friends etc leave their doors unlocked or leave valuables in their car etc...I so so so want to take my camera with me everywhere cuz I see shots literally everywhere...its just in my nature to realize that I would rather be without that shot than to be without my camera permanently
March 29th, 2011
Well, I have a small point & shoot that I just stick in my purse. It's also small enough that it fits into my pocket if I'm going on a walk or something. I think it takes decent quality photos, not quite SLR quality, but pretty good. ;)
Oh, I also have a protective case for it so that all the stuff in my purse doesn't mess it up. :)
March 29th, 2011
My camera is small enough to tuck up under the seat in my car. When I snatch it up w/o it's case, I grab a spare towel and tuck the camera in that in my gf car/ under her seats. (she also has a "cargo" bucket in the back of her suv, and it's always filled with her daughters cast off hoodies, sweaters & etc. so we'll hide our cameras in and under all the crap)
I'm considering sewing a pouch to tuck my camera into so I can stuff it into my purse in the future. My girlfriend bought an awesome camera case that looks like a purse so it does dual duty.
If I can't bring the camera in... I rely on my iphone. :D Hope this helps!
March 29th, 2011
When I can, I carry my Nikon with me but otherwise I use my iPhone. Luckily I work at a small office where everyone knows everyone so I feel safe having it with me.
March 29th, 2011
I carry my DSLR with me everywhere I go. I bought a small leather backpack that I'm able to use as a purse and a camera case. The big part of the backpack only holds the camera and kit lens- It's a pretty snug fit so I don't worry about it- it seems to be pretty well protected. All my usual "purse" items all fit into other pockets. I love always having it with me, cause no matter the shot, I can only blame myself if I miss it. I hate the extra weight- i've never been one to carry a big purse or a lot of extra junk so this has been a big change for me. But like I said, I love having it with me.
March 29th, 2011
I do take my camera most places I go... But if I don't have it, for whatever reason, there's always the iPhone camera!
March 29th, 2011
i always carry my little P&S in my purse (it's an olympus FE) and it's quite light (much lighter than the wallet). i also bring with me my canon because when it's a nice day, i go around downtown to take photos during lunch break. but when i'm at the office, i lock it up in my desk drawer. i have read that one should never leave the camera in the car, the extreme temperatures will damage it.
March 29th, 2011
I carry mine in my purse all the time, and even when I'm not carrying my purse I have the camera strap around my arm. It's just a little point-and-shoot, but it's what I have, and I'll be darned if I'm going to miss a great shot!
March 29th, 2011
I live in a small country town and work in a small office, so I leave my tripod in my car always and just take my camera in its camera bag everywhere. I have a Nikon D90 so when I go out to events I never take the carry bag I always just hold it.
March 29th, 2011
my situation is pretty much exactly the same as what @sarabeth_photo posted. the only time i dont have my camera on me is when im working because i work in a school taking care of 800 kids, so i dont really have much time to be shooting pictures, though i wish i had it with me most of the time.
March 29th, 2011
great thread :) i carry my dslr in a "purse" that i have converted into a camera bag with the inserts from a real camera bag. i also live in a small town and feel pretty comfortable sticking the purse or my camera under my car seat. i have my own law practice so i feel completely safe leaving my camera in my office at all times. if i am in a place or traveling and do not feel comfortable with my dslr, i carry a small point and shoot. i also ALWAYS have my iphone with me and my most "popular" pic was taken with my iphone while i was out on an early morning bike ride. use what you have and keep your property safe! otherwise, we won't get tired of seeing photos of things in your home :)
March 29th, 2011
I carry my DLSR when it's just too beautiful not to, and if I'm specifically going out to shoot. I have a toddler so there's many a time when I'm like "hold this" to some random stranger and then running off to get her out of whatever she's gotten herself into. It's for this reason that I've come to rely on my iPhone whenever I'm out with my daughter, unless I'm out taking pics of her:)
March 29th, 2011
i only take my dslr out when i am intentionally out for a shoot otherwise i have my iphone and a high end point and shoot. my dslr is huge and heavy so that's part of why i leave it at home.
March 29th, 2011
I always carry a point & shoot in my backpack...and I have my Droid too. Most of the time I take my Canon with me and leave it in the car until needed. If I just need the camera itself, I might stick it in my backpack. If I need all the lens and flash, I take my wallet and phone and put it in my camera bag. It's an Epiphany Clover, so it just looks like a big purse.

I always lock my van, and leave the camera in the very back if I do have it with me. That being said, I also wrote each piece of camera equipment separately on my homeowners insurance with no deductible. Peace of mind....
March 29th, 2011
I keep my DSLR with my 18-55mm lens on it, along with my 50mm, in my purse, and I bring it with me almost everywhere. If I know I'm going to be somewhere that having my purse with me isn't an option or I know I'm not going to want to have to keep an eye on it all night, I just bring my iPhone and use that for the day. I used to just bring my p&s, but I found myself getting frustrated that my shots weren't coming out as well as I would like.
March 29th, 2011
I only have a point and shoot and it now goes with me everywhere. Hoping to upgrade soon!
March 29th, 2011
I just bought a bigger purse so I can carry it with me most of the time.
March 29th, 2011
I have a p&s I carry with me. I also have my celll phone on me at all times, so I take shots with that. If I know I'm going somewhere interesting, I take the Canon Powershot SX10IS.
March 29th, 2011
I got an DSLR sleeve (similar to the ones for the laptops) for 15 dollars and that allows me to carry my camera everywhere inside my bag
March 29th, 2011
Love all the suggestions and hearing how everyone goes about there day with their cameras. Thanks a lot for all the replies!!!
March 29th, 2011
My Canon P&S is usually always with me... It fits in my pocket.
March 29th, 2011
I have a large purse and a neoprene wrap that fits my DSLR with a 50mm lens.
http://www.amazon.com/Zing-501-101-Standard-Cover-Black/dp/B0009PAVLO

I also have a point and shoot which I can carry in my jacket pocket while I'm at work.
March 29th, 2011
Thats exactly how I feel a lot of the time! But I saw an article online sometime about how people are so worried about protecting their cameras, that they never use them and miss wonderful opportunities. So I'm starting to realize that a little scratch here and there isn't really that bad! A camera is for capturing moments in time, and what's the point of having a camera if you don't use it? That's what I'm trying to remember!! :)

At work you could hide your camera with some stuff in the trunk, or under the seat in the car. But do it at home before you leave so no one sees you hiding your things! ;) If you don't want to use your dslr, take a small point and shoot and keep it in your purse wherever you go, and save the dslr for special outings. That way you'll always have a camera with you without having to worry about your dslr. Hope I helped! :)
March 29th, 2011
Jen
@girlincamo @alisongbradshaw @melissapike curious to what type of backpack/purses you have?
March 29th, 2011
I never go anywhere without my little Lumix p&s. It is so small and light to carry, and fits even the smallest pocket or purse, the results are almost indistinguishable from a dslr for most purposes, and there is no excuse ever to miss any of the photo opportinities that present themselves unexpexctedly every day.
March 29th, 2011
i keep a nikon coolpix s4000 in a phone holster on my belt all the time. i figure i'm a geek, so i have no problem looking odd with 2 phone holsters next to each other.
March 29th, 2011
I would love to be able to take my camera with me at all times but cameras, phones and purses aren't allowed at my work and I'm very reluctant to leave the camera in the car due to both theft issues and how hot cars can get inside them.
March 29th, 2011
I have a panasonic lumex @kjarn ( hi Kathy ) and it fits in my pocket! I take it everywhere from work to the A&E to have glass removed from my ankle! In fact the other day I went shopping and had my camera and almost forgot my wallet!
March 29th, 2011
I use my Lumix P&S during the week as i travel a lot - it means I can throw it in my laptop bag or coat pocket wherever I go!
March 29th, 2011
I live in the country...things are pretty safe any time any where...but I grew up in Northern Virginia so I still worry. I bought the camera backpack for my Canon & take it everywhere. I will leave it in the car (cover up Canon part on the bag though) if I go into a store. I bring it into work and put under my desk...I'm usually next to my desk all day though. I'm glad I bring everywhere. You never know what you'll see :)
March 29th, 2011
i always have at least some sort of camera with me, be it my phone, which took today's shot, my lumix, which fits in my handbag, or my dslr which i take if i am deliberately going out to take pics or for a decent walk round the park
March 29th, 2011
i carry my cam pretty much everywhere esp now that i have 365. i have 3 kids so i always want to take a photo of them and being a mum, i always have a HUGE bag so the cam just fits in there. ive just been having the 35mm on there but sometimes i miss the zoom of my bigger lens :)
March 29th, 2011
point and shoot in 1 pocket, i phone in the other. Simples!
March 29th, 2011
Yep, point and shoot for everyday carry it in your pocket photographs and use the other camera for everything else.
March 29th, 2011
I was thinking about this on my walk to work in the morning. I rarely carry my dslr with me during the work week because I have gym clothes, breakfast, snack and lunch and a liter of seltzer in my bag. I think any extra weight would make the mile and a half walk too much. I do always have my iphone and think that I should start carrying my bridge camera more often.
March 29th, 2011
Amy
I have a small point and shoot that fits in my purse but generally, I just grab my camera bag when I head out the door. I am a stay at home mom so you never know when cuteness will strike... lol.
March 29th, 2011
i bring my camera everywhere i go, it never leaves my side. i've forgotten my phone, purse, keys, etc but i never forget my camera. Once you get used to it it doesn't feel like a burden.
March 29th, 2011
i don't carry my camera with me everywhere... but i do take my kid and dog out every day after work (to the park, to the pond, or sometimes just to run errands) and i always make it a point to bring my camera with me then. if i don't find anything interesting to shoot, there's always a flower or something pretty along the way =P
March 29th, 2011
I have a P&S in my purse at all times with a small, tabletop tripod. My son has become used to mommy pulling over to the side of the road to take a picture or turning the lens around and capturing him in the back seat!
March 29th, 2011
I made this goofy cozy for my camera, so that it wouldn't be scratched by keys or coins in my purse:

Here's the matching hat just for laughs:

It works fine for me and doesn't make my camera bulky, which is why I made the cozy.
March 29th, 2011
i just lug mine. i'm considering getting that bowling bag case from photojojo though. they used to have a cool "hidden" bag that you could put your cam in and the bottom opened up. missed the boat on that one. there are a lot of cool camera "purses" out there but they are a bit too bling-y for me - i'm afraid i would get knocked over the head downtown or something. and well they're not my style. but they are gorgeous.

if i could sew i'd make some cool punk style cam cases. sigh. those inserts are also neat but they cost so much i figure for that i could make my own cooler one...
March 29th, 2011
I have a small point and shoot I carry with me all the time. It fits in a jacket pocket. It's terrible if something is moving - like a leaf or a dog, but for stills it's okay.
I keep it in a small muslin draw-string bag.
March 29th, 2011
@5unflow3 HAHA! I love it!!!!! :)
March 29th, 2011
I just carry my DLSR in my purse. Or in my camera bag that I have. Depends on the day but I always have it one way or another. Car has an alarm... always locked. Not really worried about the theft. My camera is usually attached to me all the time anyways. lol I have stun baton... if anyone gets interested. :p
March 29th, 2011
I don't always take my DSLR . . . although I do frequently throw the whole bag in the car just in case . . . but I always carry my little Canon Powershot in my purse so it's handy . . .
March 29th, 2011
I always carry a compact in a pouch on my belt or in my work case
March 29th, 2011
I usually throw my whole camera bag in the car with my DSLR . . . but I always have my handy point and shoot in my purse!
March 30th, 2011
@5unflow3r That's brilliant!
March 30th, 2011
I don't carry a 'purse' so I just have a long camera strap and sling it across my body and keep it just on my back under my arm and pack it to places I know I will use it. I keep it in the car under the seat as well for 'spontaneous' things if I'm out and about - I worry about damaging it sometimes, but so far is worked out good for me, I'm much more apt to use it - although I have a GF1 so it is a bit smaller than the regular SLR's.
March 30th, 2011
@sharkeyshark - Thanks for that link! I may invest in one just cuz! It's kinda cute and doesn't look bulky at all!
March 30th, 2011
Everyone is so amazing for responding to this. I never imagined I would get this many replies. I am seriously considering both getting a small point and shoot or getting a small case for my DSLR so I can carry it in my bag.

@5unflow3r This is a great idea!
March 30th, 2011
I hear you about getting bored with the "around the house" shots. I had that problem when I first started in January. Now I carry my camera with me everywhere, and lock the car when I'm doing errands and don't want to carry it. The good news is that I've captured some really cool things around town and now I'm selling some of my 365 photos to my local newspaper. Sweet!
March 30th, 2011
@5unflow3r that is fantastic!
March 30th, 2011
The majority of the time I have a camera with me. I have it in a camera backpack and would never leave it in the car. It has been fantastic and I have only done it since starting the project but it means I have captured things I would have missed normally, like a family of ducklings or an echidna. Today we did a trip to the doctor and didn't take it and I missed a pic of a kangaroo though it moved fast so I probably wouldn't have captured it anyway. There have been times I have used my iphone when it was impossible to carry my camera and once when I climbed 1000 steps I had enough trouble carrying myself which I knew I would so I took my son's point & shoot
March 30th, 2011
I have a small Kodak p&s in my purse at all times. Most of the time my D80 is also in my purse. I obviously have a large purse, LOL! And on top of that... sometimes my Holga is in there as well. Plus I have my Droid phone, which has a decent camera.
March 30th, 2011
@lauriehiggins That's really great; congratulations!!
March 30th, 2011
@5unflow3r What a great idea! And pretty cute, too :)
March 30th, 2011
I am still not in the habit of carrying my camera everywhere with me, but my iPhone 4 takes pictures that are as good as most P&S cams and is always in my pocket (except for those rare days I wear a pocket-less outfit). I am hoping by the end of the year I will have developed the habit of carrying my camera, but so far it hasn't "taken."
March 30th, 2011
I always have the smallest camera in my pocket and usually the larger one in my handbag..... hardly ever go anywhere without one or other and usually both! If stuck, there's also the phone camera .... but I don't often need to resort to that.
March 30th, 2011
@5unflow3r That is so cute!!!! If you had a detachable front then it would be great for candid shots!
March 30th, 2011
I try to carry one of my DSLRs with me....if not either the Sony TX5 or Fuji F100fd are asked to do the honours.... occasionally I will use another camera (colleagues or a loaner). If I dont manage to take a picture it is an 11th hour shot at home
March 30th, 2011
@5unflow3r love it, I think you should set up an Etsy shop and sell them :)
March 30th, 2011
@5unflow3r OMG I think I love you! That is AMAZING, you so should start selling them, I would be a customer!

I just use a big bag or swing the camera onto my back using the strap if I'm climbing after a toddler somewhere. I have had an incident with a juice bottle and the camera so now tend to leave the kids refreshments in the car (see I have my priorities in order!)
March 30th, 2011
I have two point-n-shoot cameras and I'm trying to get in the habit of carrying the older one in my purse. I have my cell, but the pictures it takes are horrible; though I do use it if that is all I have.
March 31st, 2011
There have been too many times where I've missed a great shot so I carry my little point and shoot in my pocket. Better safe than sorry. I just pull it out whenever I see something interesting.
March 31st, 2011
I don't usually have mine with me during the daily mundane tasks, but if I'm leaving the house for anything else, the camera gets tossed on the passenger (or back) seat. I've got a Tamrac Aero Speed bag, holds the D60, flash, second lens, gorillapod, two extra batteries, four memory cards, lens filters....... you get the idea. And from the outside, it does not look like a camera bag, just your regular, generic backpack. Mine is the same model featured on the front page of the Tamrac site ( http://www.tamrac.com)
March 31st, 2011
If you're worried about your camera but have something you can lock it to, pacsafe products are pretty good. I don't use the camera bag, but do have the laptop rucksack and it's really good to know it's secure. They're quite expensive, but worth it to protect your equipment http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=93 xx
March 31st, 2011
I always carry my p&s in my purse. Though I'd really like to get a better one - it doesn't have manual shutter and aperature control. I have a backpack for my dslr so I use that as a purse if I'm planning on specific pictures. I always lock it in the car (the trunk so it's not visible) when I'm out and not in my car (like a theatre or dinner). That is a problem with our cold weather in the winter, though. I have been known to put the dslr in my regular purse - even with the zoom lens on it. It's easier to get at that way, too!
April 1st, 2011
I take my Kodak P&S everywhere with me, I have made it a small felt pouch so it doesnt get damaged or slide too easily out of my pocket.
My Nikon D40 lives in a Lowe Pro bag with lots of little pockets for spare SD cards, etc., but thats too heavy to lug around all the time. It has a long strap and handy for when I go walking or I can throw it over my shoulder when out on the bike.
I also have a new android phone with a nice camera I am learning to use. The Lowe pro bag has room for all three cameras, my purse (wallet) and keys. I never leave the house without the Kodak and the phone. The Nikon is for specific trips to take certain shots when I am not in a hurry, although if i have that I dont carry much else.
I love the camera cosy, have been trying to invent something similar for the Nikon. I do like to keep my cameras nice.
April 6th, 2011
I take my Nikon with me everywhere. ~ I was putting it in a big bag, while carrying a separate purse, so I didn't scratch my camera. ~ I eventually started looking for a camera bag, or any bag really that would work better and found a bag I love. Its a camera bag, but its small enough that I can put my camera in one side and my wallet and stuff on the other and carry it around like a purse. ~
http://www.luggage.com/Golla-G412-GLX1012.html ~ Its like this one. ~ I'm stay at home with my kids, but I wouldn't feel safe leaving it in my car, so thats why I started looking for a bag. ~
April 8th, 2011
I got a strap intended for binoculars. The brand is Vero Vellini, found it at a store selling hunting equipment. Was very cheap and it has good cushion, much better my default Nikon one.
And for a bag, I have a Swissgear Camera bag, looks cool with gray color. http://photographybanzai.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/IMGP8621.jpg
April 9th, 2011
@sagarcia I have a small P&S that I use for my daily photos, for when I'm going to work and just want to have something around just in case. The more expensive ones will have manual functionality and still be small enough to slip in your pocket. Works for me!
