Lester went out with his 'Last of the Summer Wine' friends today, so I took myself to Waterperry Gardens - a favourite haunt.
This is a detail of a statue in the formal garden there. The lamp is held by a beautifully serene looking girl. The sculptor, Nathan David, must have been inspired by the Bhagavad Gita ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhagavad_Gita ) 10 - 11, because he has incised it round the statue's plinth:
"Out of mere compassion for them, I, abiding in their self, destroy the darkness born of ignorance by the luminous lamp of wisdom"

What a beautiful statue. Wonderful colouring, and good pov. The lamp and the hands look so serene.
I have an intriguing image of "Last of the summer wine friends"!
