The apartment has passed the ‘Emma Durnford overnight test’! Comfortable bed, fairly quiet for the middle of a city and with a good shower. We even had a good cup of tea as we remembered to get some fresh milk on our way back last night.
Breakfast was OK but at €14 for just toast, juice and coffee I have decided we can eat in for a fraction of the cost for the other 4 mornings.
Athens is really impressing me. For some reason I had expected a pretty polluted city, built up with not much greenery. It is the exact opposite. Whilst the traffic is busy there are lovely tree lined streets and plenty of open areas with spring flowers and more trees.
Photo count today is 217. We have already seen a large number of sights which I am listing in our visit order: Hadrian’s Arch, The Temple of Olympian Zeus, Kallimarmaro (Olympic) Stadium, Zappeio Hall, The National Gardens, Greek Parliament building complete with the Evzones a special unit of the Hellenic Army guarding the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Guard, Monastiraki Squre - great made to order ice cream, Hadrian’s Library, Agora (old market place), the Roman Forum and the Temple of the Winds… before taking our first trip on the Metro back to our home station of the Acropolis. Wow. I’m looking forward to finding out our final footstep count after we have gone for dinner!
