I found this sea urchin shell on the beach ages ago and had this grand idea of putting mini LEDs in it for a mini pretty thing. As is the norm for many of my grand ideas, it sat on a shelf until I was desperate for something to photograph. Then I realized it was still full of sand and other beachy kinds of gunk. For the last few days, it has been soaking in the sink, getting gently washed and soaked some more. Finally ready for its photo shoot I was carrying it over to my bench...and dropped it. Yup, it broke into a bunch of little pieces and one big piece. Thankfully, with careful positioning of my camera, it just looks like an artfully posed sea urchin shell.
The light shining through it reminds me of the one my grandad made for me shortly after Eric and I were married. It was a ginormous shell. Grandad had lathed a stand for it and had put a nightlight bulb in the stand. With the sea urchin shell over the bulb, it created a soft orange glow. Unfortunately, the depredations of three small boys and, I think, our 12th move, finally destroyed it.
