Uh oh! by evalieutionspics

Uh oh!

Someone in the ladybug house put liquid dish soap in the dishwasher again!

Actually, this is the "spit" from the spittlebug. It is a protective covering used to insulate the nymph from temperature changes as well as to hide it from predators. It isn't terribly dangerous to the garden unless there are TONS of them there. No need for poisons in any case...just a quick spray with the garden hose.

There...now you know everything I know about garden spit.
hahahaha
great focus and detail

Thank you so much for the interesting spittlebug info! I've noticed this in several places around my yard but I didn't know what it was all about. Terrific shot! :-)

@annied Thank you! I got to try out my new elbow pads!

@Cherrill Thank you so much! I have been trying to take a photo of them for a couple of weeks, but all that I have seen have been well into the wheat field next door. Since it has warmed up, I am not keen on tromping into the field where the vipers might be hanging out., so when I saw this right in my own garden where I can see if there are snakes easily, I was happy.

@bkbinthecity Thank you very much!

@moonmtn Thank you so much! This is on a mint plant which is on the edge of the daisy patch. Basically, the mint and daisies are fighting for territory. I'm not sure which will win.

@ziggy77 Thank you very much!

@illumaneight Thank you so much! I don't think I had ever heard of them until I was an adult. How is that possible?! Every kid should know about spit bugs!

@jeanniec57 Thank you! I am so glad that you have the opportunity to show the children something that is fun for them and also educational. I think when WE love things, it translates to them.

@joysabin Thank you very much for your encouraging comment.

@gaylewood Thank you very much! We learn so many wonderful things from each other here; some of those things even have something to do with photography!

Priceless! I came to know the habits of the Spittle bug when we moved to Canada in the summers! Never heard of it before then, and, while "unattractive", it does wash off easily... This was an interesting "share"...
