When I went to fill up the bee fountains, I noticed this guy on the puppy escape ramp. He was huge! He was just chilling, so I got my camera and carefully and prayerfully leaned out over the ramp to take a photo. Just as I took the last one, I heard a loud buzzing, and this guy ran as though his life was in mortal danger. He hid on the underside of the rope that fastens the ramp to the pool deck. When I got to my feet, a hornet was buzzing around the newly filled bee fountain. So...now we know...ginormous winged ants are fearful of hornets. I am just glad the hornet was more interested in the bee fountain than in me and my camera which was hanging out over the pool!
Thank you all very much for your lovely comments! A bee fountain is nothing more than a bunch of marbles in a shallow container. I add water to it ever day...sometimes more than once a day now that the temperature is rising. I have a photo in my March album, but apparently, my linkage skills have gone on holiday so I can't post a link to it for you. I have several throughout the garden. I am hoping to reduce the number of bees heading to the pool for water and thereby reduce the number of bees that drown in the pool. I appreciate your comments and interest in the bee fountain.
