Tracey's Bed by fbailey

Tracey's Bed

Went to the Turner Contemporary in Margate to see My Bed by Tracey Emin.

"My Bed famously features Tracey Emin's own bed and gives a snapshot of her life after a traumatic relationship breakdown. Originally made in Emin's Waterloo council flat in 1998 and included in her Turner Prize exhibition in 1999, the unmade bed surrounded by the stuff of Emin's chaotic life marked a moment of epiphany, of which she has said 'I just suddenly thought, "This is horrific". And then it all turned around for me. It stopped being horrific and started being beautiful. Because I hadn't died, had I?"

I wanted to see this out of curiosity and also after I'd read that she was criticised for it by someone saying 'anyone could have done that'. Her response was 'but they didn't, I did'. So now I can say I've been there, done that.

Is it art? I have no idea ...
An evocative image given your narrative :)

I applaud your reportage but can't say I see art in Tracey's bed!

I like your image. It makes an otherwise completely mundane piece of nonsense a little more artistic.😎

I like the reason behind it, perhaps it's not art but I don't know what else it would be !

I like your explanation to go with your image. Not what I would call art personally.

Mmmmm, not too sure about this as art.

When you know the story behind the scene it actually makes you stop and think. Isn't that what art is meant to do? It can't always be pretty.

@robz Thanks Rob, you're right. More important to think and consider something than merely admire. More memorable too!

Yes.. it's art! She conceived an idea based on observation of her surroundings then executed it so well! It's also how we should do photography... and I wish I could!
