I found this beautiful Camellia walking down a local street where it was one of many blooms. Naturally on arriving home I had to look up information about camellias and have chosen a few facts to share with you:
Camellia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae.
The genus was named by Linnaeus after the Jesuit botanist Georg Joseph Kamel, who worked in the Philippines, though he never described a camellia.
The Camellia is the state flower of Alabama.
The Camellia Bowl was an American post-season college football game under the auspices of the NCAA.
Camellia buds are an iconic symbol for the Chanel fashion house's haute couture; a tradition started by Coco Chanel herself.
White camellias became a symbol of New Zealand women's right to vote and feature on the country's ten-dollar note.
Terrific Katharine, I love having the 'back story' to a picture. We have white ones and a friend has dark pink ones but I've not seen this vivid pink shade before... stunning shot.
@pittcj17 Thank you. The sun was just coming out as I took the picture so I am not sure how long the water drops would have stayed on the blooms. Katharine
@vignouse Thanks Richard. The whole bush was a riot of colour at the edge of a garden by the gate and looked superb. Whoever lived there must have green fingers. Katharine
I wish you success in life and creation, Alex.
