The mallard is a dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, the Falkland Islands and South Africa. This duck belongs to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae.
Mallards live in wetlands, eat water plants and small animals, and are social animals preferring to congregate in groups or flocks of varying sizes. This species is the main ancestor of most breeds of domesticated ducks.
This female was on the mill pond at Tickhill, and it was interesting to sit beside the pond watching the antics of various birds there before catching the bus from Tickhill back into Doncaster on my journey home.
I hope you've enjoyed the little tour of Tickhill that I've shared over the last few days. I certainly enjoyed my visit to a place I had not explored before.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, which put this shot on the popular page.
It may be only a duck, but it is fascinating to sit and watch them - they are such characters!
