Colonnade, Kirkby Stephen by fishers

Colonnade, Kirkby Stephen

On the north side of the Market Square in Kirkby Stephen is this lovely colonnade, which forms the entrance to the churchyard.

The inscription above the entrance reads 'Built by the direction of the will of John Waller Esq, a purser in his Majesty's Navy and a native of this town - George Gibson, Architect and William Richardson, Mason'

The lovely deep red sandstone used in it's construction is used in the building of the church as well, and it gives a richness to the buildings it is used in.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, which put this shot on the trending and popular pages.

I should add that it doesn't always sunshine in Kirkby Stephen. My only previous visit there was as part of a long walk, and passing through the town in the rain, this colonnade was a great spot to shelter for a while before continuing in the rain!
