Seen from inside the Medieval city gate of Bootham Bar, and looking south-east, High Petergate has a very long history. It follows the line of the Roman Via Principalis, one of the major roads of the Roman city of Eboracum.
The current road has a fascinating variety of building ages, styles, heights and materials, and despite the lack of planning, the mixture gives a pleasing view.
There is an old pub close to where I lived before I got married called 'The Hole in the Wall' and it is still there with the same name. I remember when I was a little boy we used to go with an empty wine bottle and the man used to fill it for us from a big cask, naturally for a fee.
Love these old streets full of amazing history.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, it is interesting to read your comments.
I should have added to the notes that the name 'Petergate' comes from it's close proximity to York Minster, which is dedicate to St Peter.
As I posted this shot, my eye was caught by the 'Hole in the Wall' sign on the left hand side. I always assumed that the hole in the name was a hole in the city walls, since it is located so close to one of the entrance arches into the medieval city, but the illustration is actually of St Marys Abbey. See my next shot for more on the abbey.
Thank you Bob - There are those who think York has too much old, with all the problems to transport and deliveries that the narrow network of streets creates. I showed this quite a while ago - http://365project.org/fishers/365/2015-08-28
