At the end of June I posted shots to show how York was adapting to the needs of pedestrians as the lockdown was beginning to be relaxed. One shot showed barriers closing one of the city centre roads to traffic ( https://365project.org/fishers/365/2020-06-27 )
Several of you commented on the rather ugly orange barriers, and there were numerous comments in the local press as well. At the suggestion of local businesses, the barriers have had sleeves put on them to encourace shoppers to shop locally. So here we have the latest enhancement.
its a good thing to support locals right now, big companies can survive, the smaller have a harder time to recoup. Glad something positive it being done in York
Lovely idea. I don't remember the shot you mentioned. Covid cases went down to zero for several days a week or two ago and we were promised by our P.M. that the pandemic had been defeated in our Islands. So airport, seaports were fully opened, mass gruop parties organised feast celebrations resstarted. After one week we got flooded with covid19 infections. The situation is worse than it was in March and many activities have been cancelled . We have gone back to worry.
Thank you all for your comments, they are very much appreciated.
On the whole, the traffic restrictions in York city centre have been benificial. It is much less confusing for motorists than it used to be, and numbers of people visiting the city centre are increasing. However the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in parts of northern England has been a worrying development. At the moment infection rates in York remain very low, but who knows what the future holds.
