Another glimpse into the archive, and a shot taken in South Oxfordshire in February 2006, at the dawn of my digital photography adventure.
The village of Ewelme is situated at the edge of the Chiltern Hills, not far from the market town of Wallingford. It is a very attractive village with a good number of brick and flint houses, and some lovely thatched roof cottages.
Towards the south-west end of the village on a hillside are three impressive features - at the top of the hill is a stone church, with a cloister of almshouses below it, and below them a village school.
This shot shows some of the almshouses, with a water pump in front of them. The almshouses and school were founded in 1437. Originally there were 13 houses which provided homes for men only. More recently the number was reduced to 8, with interior changes to create larger homes (and women can now live there) but mainaining the external appearance. More almshouses were built in another part of the village to maintain the original number of homes.
As you can see, it wasn't a great day for visiting or photography, with snow falling (though not settling) when I took this shot.
This photo brought back memories. I love the village of Ewelme. It was the next village to where we lived at RAF Benson in the late 1970s. during David's RAF days.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Ewelme is one of a number of attractive villages in the area. Some of them, including Ewelme, achieved an element of fame when they were featured in the long running tv series 'Midsomer Murders'.
My son in law was in the RAF and his first posting was to RAF Benson. I loved the attractive villages and countryside around that area, and did lots of walks exploring its beauty.
You have captured the rain!! Well done
