The last week of Blackpool Illuminations this week, they end on Sunday 6th November. Lovely evening last night so Harry & I wrapped up warm, called at Harry Ramsdoms on the promenade for fish & chips before having a walk along the front.
I was amazed how hard it was to get a decent photo of the bright lights & haven't done it any justice at all !!! I used auto mode mostly but did try manual but all I mostly got was a blurr of light. I did notice there were several photographers with tripods so I will try again next year !! Funnily enough all these committed photographers were on their own....something I think Harry would relate to !!!!!!!
There are a couple of trams all kitted out with lights, this one & a boat which wasn't quite as well lit.
I really wanted to get the full sweep of the promenade from the end of the pier but that will have to wait until I know a bit more about shutter speed etc !!!!
I think you've done a great job Pat! Obviously I'm faving as this makes me VERY happy!! I'm not at all sure how you'd shoot this when things are moving without getting any blur. Maybe you'd have to go with a very high ISO and then it would be very grainy. Alan Warren @brizmako does lots of night shots - he might have some tips. Also Michael Elliott @michaelelliott does some fab night stuff but also had trouble with a moving parade - it's a very tricky subject. But this definitely looks like The Illuminations to me - I can feel the wind howling off the seafront just looking at it!
lovely night time shot Pat, cameras are pretty good at doing there own exposure Pat, but if you are shooting night time you do need a tripod to get the best results.
My tip (for what it's worth) .......I'd shoot in aperture priority with as small a hole as possible (big F number), with a low ISO number on a tripod and and try manual focussing
@jmj Was a lovely night Judith hardly any wind at all !!! Thanks for tips !!!
@phil_howcroft Will try big F number etc ! i seem to have forgotten all I learnt at class & it's quite hard in the dark getting right setting specially with a bored husband in tow !!!!!!
This is beautifully done. Illumination shots are really difficult. I failed miserably to get decent shots of the Hong Kong night skyline at the weekend.
