I parked myself by the side of the road to catch this cycle race as it went through Churchtown.
I have always liked the hedge in front of this house & I had big ideas of photoing the cyclists going past the said hedge.
When I downloaded I realised I had not panned the cyclists so here you have a clear background but blurred cyclists....can do better!!!!!
Will comment more later as out tonight but won't be late!
Three good things:
1. Being taken out for a meal tonight for a belated Christmas present by our DIL's parents.
2. HD+ to catch up with the 2nd episode of Broadhurst I missed on Monday evening.
3. Blackberries & raspberries stewed with a drop of rum!
I believe this is called a motion blur!! If your weather is anything like ours they will have got soaked!! How lovely out for dinner..........we are off to friends and no b&bs to get up for!!
I will share this with Jonathan and Allan!!!
It's lovely and somehow the black and white really sums up the day here!
Enjoy your night out............blackberries and raspberries with rum....mmm!
But if you pan the background would be blurred! Now to my mind the house is not moving so should not be blurred the cyclist are so the fact that there are blued as Fanny says implies motion which is good.
Nice shot -- the blurred cyclist show that they are moving !! I am not familiar with Panning ( or many other terms ) !! but shall try it some day . Not the best of weathers to stand & pan anything today !!
Ah - Churchtown! Mum and Dad lived in Catterall (Gates Lane) until they passed away a few years ago. Remember walking to Churchtown for the annual "Show" . Thanks for the memory - and great pic!
Pat , you don't necessarily need to pan, your shutter speed is 1/125th of a second which is not fast enough to freeze the bikes...all you needed to do was ensure the shutter speed was higher...shooting with either (a) shutter priority or (b) selecting a smaller f number .......so that your shutter speed gets to about 1/500th of a second would guarantee the bikes were sharp, Panning just gets the houses blurred and the bikes sharp !!!
@phil_howcroft Oh thanks Phil...I am useless on shutter speeds, can't seem to get my head round them, I think it will be like a bolt of lightening one day!!!! Trouble is I don't spend enough time with my camera, take it out with me, take a few quick shots & that's it.
Pat ..the 1/500th of a second is an intelligent guess on my part. You might even need to go slightly higher....depends on the speed those cyclists were going through the village :)
If you want to pan, you have to have a lot of time to get it right! You have guess how fast they are going past you and move the camera capturing the same speed. I think you need a slower speed to leave the aperture open longer! Glad you did this so as to see the hedge!
I love this charming composition, Pat! I like the motion of the cyclists and the steady focus on that marvelous house and garden. Such a wonderful shot!
It's nice to see the movement in the bikes and would have been a shame to blur the lovely house. I have tried panning - without much success I might add!
3 sounds fabulous and I might have to find some sort of player to see the Bradhusrt episodes I've missed. Your title and shot made me chuckle - you were obviously too overexcited. I did a whole series of bus shots the other day and forgot that I was on manual focus...abotu 100 shots, that could have been great were all completely out of focus and unusable!
Mmm that all sounds good. And you've captured the speed instead! Top reminder about Broadhurst! Much better than than Lightfields thing - if it goes any slower it will be rewinding...
@tonybeale This house is next to The Horns inn Tony, they are doing a big refurbish there at the moment & it's almost ready to open & will be called The Horns Country Inn.
It's lovely and somehow the black and white really sums up the day here!
Enjoy your night out............blackberries and raspberries with rum....mmm!
Nice monochrome though :)
