Sewing curtains today, something I haven't done for years. I had given the sewing machine, which used to belong to my mum, to Lydia so had to go & retrieve it last night.
I have one window up & will start the other one tomorrow.
Changing my kitchen to red for the winter.
You can see Escape to the Country on in the background on the TV.
Three good things;
1. My mum who taught me how to use & more to the point thread her sewing machine....something after all these years & little sewing I have never forgotten.
2. I am going to The Little Theatre at Thornton with a friend tonight to see Arsenic & Old Lace.
3. There will be a large G&T at her house waiting for me!
you're so good Pat...sewing curtains...not sure if I'd remember how to thread a machine, I did learn at school once! Love the thought of G&T...I might get myself a large one later too...still struggling with IT issues so not been loading at all lately! Think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy new software!
@sparkle I hate sewing Juliette but do it because made to measure so expensive & curtains are pretty easy in the end....would really rather but them!!! Thanks, hope you are back to normal re computer soon...we miss your fab shots!!!
Ah - red and white check - lovely, warm and welcoming!! For a moment there I thought the TV was your husband and another family member coming in to disturb your work! Your room looks so cosy! I had to get my machine out the other day and was dreading it because I thought I had forgotten how to thread it - but in fact it all came back to me easily, I think these things get engrained in you over time.
@tishpics It's amazing how the threading comes back to you Patricia......even filling the spool was a doddle..it must be 20 years since I used this machine too!!
@pistonbroke That's outrageous ...tell them to turn the heat up, it costs an arm & a leg to stay in a hotel these days!! Bet you are paying single supplement too! I had a lady in last night who used every facility available which she was entitled to....tea, biscuits, jelly babies . central heating on,porridge full breakfast & yet I didn't charge her any extra, just half the a price of a double...things are going to change methinks!!!
Gosh G&T AND theatre - enjoy! Your curtains will surely look lovely. I must admit that was my most unfavourite sewing job although I made loads of clothes for the children and my wedding dress (not in that order!). Hope you will show us them in situ?
@quietpurplehaze Oh funny Hazel though quite often in that order now a days!!! I made simple dresses for my daughter but that was it as far as sewing was concerned I'm afraid. Your wedding dress I am impressed!!! I will show you all the result!!
Off out now!!
@happypat - I spend most of my life in hotels (37 so far this year!) and you'd be amazed how many of them are either so hot it melts your eyeballs or so cold your coffee freezes over. I actually take a small fan heater in my luggage and often have to use it. It's not even a cheapie hotel, either! It's got to the stage where I have to leave myself a post-it so that when I get up in the morning I know where I am..e.g ."You are in Leeds"!
I'm afraid I leave making curtains to a professional and it's very expensive! Good for you for doing such a good job on the old sewing machine. It's like riding a bike, you don't forget! The hardest part is threading the needle! Lovely light for this pic!
Feeling guilty now that I haven't finished mine (they've spent the last 5 years artistically arranged on the floor rather than being hemmed!). These will be lovely and cheerful for winter
Pretty material Pat. I'm charged with making some out of 'VW camper van' material for Rachel. I've done bunting today - took ages to get going because the machine kept jamming. After multiple re- threadings I rang my mum and she told me to rethreadi it. So I half heartedly did it again while she was on the phone and bingo!! Obviously mums know best. Hope you've enjoyed the play.
@maggiemae@judithg t was the threading that nearly did for me today...good job I had one of those threaders you put through the eye & then put the cotton through. I don't think I would tackle proper living room curtains though, just the cheerful cotton kitchen ones.
wonderful composition. what is the brand? i recently learned quilting arts and love it. an international quilting arts festival is coming to houston next month and i am excited to see it and take classes! have fun at the theatre! sounds like a fun night out!
Golly, I did so much sewing when my kids were little...I even made slipcovers for a couch with pattern matching, zippers, and welting on the cushions. And it had four seats - eight cushions all together. Did it all in two days. And curtains and valances and pillow shams, and clothing and costumes...I think it is genetic...my Mom loves to sew - still making quilts for the great grands. My daughter's first job was doing alterations and repairs to boy's military uniforms. Getting hard to see to thread the needle, but I can still thread the machine with my eyes closed!
Pat, this is such a wonderful photo! A warm and homey composition! I love red in a kitchen. I hope we are treated to shot of your winter redo when you have it all pulled together.
Hope you had a delightful evening at the theater! And cheers! :)
Such a great shot Pat. The focus is right where it should be. I have recently discovered that I can buy ready made curtains cheaper than I can make them. But I'm sure they are not as good.
Well good for you. That is something Josie used to do years ago, but lately she has been too busy. I do know she still enjoys doing things like that, so maybe in the near future she will break out the creative needles again.
Thank you all so much for all these lovely stories & comments...your personal memories are all very precious & it's so good to look back & think about days gone by & I must say even though I do not like sewing...the only reason I made my own was that my windows are an odd size......I really enjoyed the satisfaction & rather cosy of couple of days sitting in the kitchen sewing.
FAV! my favorite hobby is sewing...great pint of view! I used to have a home business sewing costumes for ballet dancers and high school dance teams. It was so fun to work from home and I made awesome money and was so proud of all my costumes when the State competition came around
Off out now!!
Forgot to say that I really like your shot!!
Hope you had a delightful evening at the theater! And cheers! :)
