Talking of WW1 I thought I would show you the revamped cenotaph in The Flag Market.
The original memorial was always very nice with seating all around but it looks very large & dominates the whole square somewhat now.
The building behind used to be the post office which has now moved to the other side of town down a side street...a big demotion I think.
I have no idea what the building is used for now.
The right hand wall where the seats are belongs to the Harris Library which I used to frequent on my way home from school...a few other 365ers too no doubt..@judithg & @fueast included.
This part of Preston is the best bit with some very gracious buildings which I will show you in another photo someday.
Three good things:
1. A visit to the hairdressers.
2. I am getting a little better at typing with two fingers!
3. The first Victoria plums in the green grocers.
Pat, so glad you are OK!!! (In my first job I was required to learn to type so was given a typewriter (sit up & beg) and a manual and told to practise each day. So I did and it's stood me in good stead for all my life!!!!)
@quietpurplehaze well I am much better at typing than I was & it's surprising how fast you can go with one finger but it does get rather laborious sometimes & the more tired I am the worse I am! A big skill being able to type ...not much call for typing, nursing & farming!
Preston must be quite large with all those sidewalk sitters and big buildings! Nice crisp photograph with lots to see - like the green umbrellas! I taught myself to type some years ago - like about 40 as we didn't have it at school and have been so pleased I did - especially on 365!
@beryl@busylady not really sure but perhaps they sold flags!! There is a covered market just down the street from this......the flag market is the posher market & where all the big stuff is celebrated in town.
@fueast No Alison still there in front of the old post office but tarted it up .....it looks bigger somehow .....there is grass round the edges too, no seats which is a pity in my mind as it was a good place to watch the world go by. A great square & even better if they hadn't put up that glass monstrosity in place of the town hall which burnt down...before your time! Almost before my time!!
Just laughing about your fingers - I thought I'd missed an operation! I know what you're saying about the cenotaph - it didn't dominate the same as it does now. Cambridge post office has been demoted as well.
Very nice shot ..... I think some of the problems with the seating was the drunks who often frequented it. This used to be our evacuation point for fire tests before they started all this work! :)
