Mark

I thought I would try a portrait today ....our friend Mark kindly obliged!

My new lens is supposed to be very good at portraits but the trouble is no have no willing models!

Three good things:
1. I have seen The Imitation Game this afternoon......well worth watching, we enjoyed it hugely & I would recommend it highly!
2. I have taken @judithg advice & started reading New York by Edward Rutherford before my holiday in the USA next March. I am going to enjoy it I think.
3. The 3 way traffic lights in the village have been removed as they have filled in the 2 foot square hole in the road at last.
Such a lovely portrait, relaxed, natural and great lighting

Great portrait. The light here is wonderful.

I'm glad he was willing. I imagine he liked this very much!

brilliant portrait Pat

I agree with Claire. A lovely black and white portrait. What lens are you using? I am in such a dilemma as to which lens to chose as a Christmas present. 100 mm macro or 70-200 (combined with an early January birthday).

This is a superb portrait - your friend, Mark, has such a kindly and empathetic face and a lovely smile (in his eyes too).
November 26th, 2014
Really nice portrait. Mark has a nice relaxed smile = Fav

Wonderful portrait

Great b&w portrait - and what a lovely kind and handsome face
November 26th, 2014
Beautifully shot Pat!

You have caught the feeling of a nice person smiling out of this shot. Good lighting and focus. Something I would say and I hesitate to say this because the face is so good, is that the light circle just on the top of his head slightly detracts from the shot. Is this from the camera or something moveable. Re the cloning on my shot, this is somewhere it could be applied. Just a thought but great portrait.

Nice job. What part of the States are you visiting Pat
November 26th, 2014
@jennywren I agree Je, I have just said to Harry I shouldhave moved that light above his head....just a badly positioned light for this portrait ......I will have to have ago moving it! Thank for the comment Jen...much appreciated.

@digitalrn New York Rick...going for four days at the end of March. Looking forward to visiting your great country for the first time!
November 26th, 2014
Great portrait - works well in black and white, too
November 26th, 2014
Great portrait.. he has a very kind face...

@motherjane I had a terrible time choosing between a 40-150 zoom lens or this one which is a prime lens 48mm 1.1.8 ......imchosecthis one because although I would love a bit more zoom I wanted something a bit more creative that would give me DOF etc. I like it very much but still learning massively about its capabilities. I am using a. Impact camera & the four third system lens so you actuall double up the number...eg the 40- 150 goes to 300 so my 48mm will be equivalent to you 10mm. I think that's how it works! I am still hoping to get the zoom one one day though!
November 26th, 2014
Compact camera Jane...I should check what the autu correct has done before I post!
November 26th, 2014
Great portrait , enjoy your lens
November 26th, 2014
This is a great portrait Pat you've captured him so well. My daughter and I dd a four day New York trip and loves every minute. So much to do and see.
November 26th, 2014
Nice clear picture of his face with the light coming in from the side! Good on Mark!
November 26th, 2014
It's a great portrait with some helpful feedback which is always useful for us all. You've confused me with your numbers though did you mean 100mm? Fav anyway!
November 26th, 2014
@motherjane I have a 100mm macro and it's brilliant so that's what I would choose. Macro helped me discover all sorts of new things that normally go unnoticed but it's also great for portraits etc and the quality of the photos you can get allows you to crop quite tight in which is the same as zoom really. Sorry Pat for using your comment screen for my ramblings.
November 26th, 2014
@barrowlane all the advice & info we have the better Rob.........I really like my new lens & interesting to hear your opinion too.
November 26th, 2014
@barrowlane sorry only just seen your above comment.. I think the four thirds system 48mm is equivalent to your 100mm .....the number is doubled up I believe.
November 26th, 2014
Great portrait, he seems really relaxed.
November 26th, 2014
wooooo hoooo PAt, fantastic, great bokeh, looks like you've been doing it for years. Mono too, ticking all my photography boxes here Pat :)

GReat work pat
November 26th, 2014
A super portrait
November 26th, 2014
@phil_howcroft thanks Phil...better without the bokeh on top of his head!!
November 26th, 2014
@happypat yes i was going to say that pat, but as it was you stepping outside your normal genre I was too kind to mention it :) . It is easily cloned out with a few clicks and strokes of a brush
November 26th, 2014
An excellent portrait!
November 27th, 2014
Very nice work Pat
November 27th, 2014
@happypat That should be fun, the Big City. I live about three hours away and I have never been there. I blame it all on being a country boy and not really liking the big city life.
November 27th, 2014
@barrowlane @ happypat thank you both for your advice on the macro. Am just wondering which lens I would get more use out of during the winter months ...
November 27th, 2014
Fantastic photo. What a lovely friendly face and so relaxed as your subject! Glad you enjoyed the movie.
Must catch up on here soon!
November 27th, 2014
@motherjane those were the sort of arguments I had with myself Jane....if you want to do lovely close up nature shots eg birds on the bird table I would go for the zoom but L's of arguments for the other macro one too.. Just say you will get both one day but chose the most important to your life at this very moment. I am more a street photographer, not into flowers & birds much so I would use my zoom to catch people's faces without them knowing so horses for courses!
November 27th, 2014
@digitalrn wow a country boy indeed. I am two & a half hours from London & have been 3 times in the last couple of months but for the first 25 years of married life we went nowhere & I think only went to zlondon about 3 times until ten tears ago. I think nothing of it now....love going to the big city.
November 27th, 2014
Wonderful portrait! He has a lovely smile & twinkly eyes! :)
November 27th, 2014
Lovely portrait :)
November 27th, 2014
Fabulous portrait!
November 27th, 2014
Great portrait!
November 27th, 2014
We'll he's taken a lovely photo! Glad you're liking New York - it's move through history is really well done while each period in time is an entertaining story. And once you've read it you'll want to go to the Tenement Museum - we just turned up but to be safe you can book in advance and chose which immigrant story you hear during the tour. We did Russian Jews with a lovely and knowledgeable descendent.
November 27th, 2014
I am on catch up at the moment. Lovely portrait, your friend will be pleased with this shot.
I just love your film critiques. I look forward to The Imitation Game. Hope it doesn't arrive here too soon though, no time at the moment to go and see it.
