My second landscape today is the famous view from St Mary's churchyard in Kirkby Lonsdale Cumbria.
The art critic & writer John Ruskin described this view as 'one of the loveliest views in England'.
It was painted by the painter J M W Turner & was sold by Bonhams at auction over the telephone to a private UK buyer for £217.250 in 2012.
I should really have moved my camera to the left & kept the farm out of the picture.
Apparently in 2003 a farmer was refused planning permition to convert some barns into houses so in revenge painted his corrugated barn red, white & blue! There was no red, white or blue in sight the day I took this photo!
The river is the River Lune which flows into the Irish Sea at Lancaster.
Three good things:
1. I can hear!! I have been today & had my hearing aids fitted...everything is weirdly loud but you can't see them at all!
2. A new glass in our woodburner ......so much better to see the flames!
3. Travel guides!
I have been trying really hard to reply individually but tonight I am being lazy........thank you all so much for your lovely comments & faves , younare all so lovely!
Getting the sunlight on those fields is the best for this lovely scene! It looks like parkland! I'll have to find Turner's painting. Great to hear about the hearing aids - Johns got some you can hardly see but he's lost one - they are so small!
@maggiemae No I wasn't keen on the Turner one either, very wishy washy I thought! You can't see mine when they are in either ...just a thin wire but everything sounds very tinny & loud a, even the clicking of my iPad keys are deafening! I hoe I don't lose mine, they are small !
@ceilidh Well I woukdnt hsve paid all that money would you? @maggiemae .this was quite a hazy day when I took this photo & I think Ruskins view veered to the left more,
@pinkpaintpot I have a photo of the hen house that might turn up one day when I am looking for a filler!! You can't beat Kirkby Lonsdale can you Linda?
A beautiful scene, much nicer than Turner's in my opinion, maybe you can get almost a quarter of a million pounds for this picture.
Good on the farmer who painted his barn red white and blue, fantastic story.
@pinkpaintpot Oh so do i! My friend who died lady year used to love the auction & we had a few happy Thursday mornings there & then to the cafe with the fire for late breakfast. What a great place for your friend to live...even have a nice Booths!
@willowdragon I am rather astonished how loud everything is Al......I must have been dealer than I thought & they aren't even up to prescription yet! Thought she wouldn't go to the limit at first....bit of a shock to the brain she said!
You have aced the landscape challenge. I agree with John Ruskin...this view is outstanding!!
So happy that you are thrilled with your hearing aids, Pat! I'm sure it must make a huge difference in your life to be able to hear clearly.
@peggysirk It does indeed Peggy......I have got used to them straightaway although she did say it might take six months! The only thing I don't like about them is the wire my my ear itches at first!
Love your nr. 1.
