Making my bargain John Lewis material curtains today.
I hate sewing but strangely enough I like making curtains. I think it's because they are fairly quick & make a great difference to a room!
Just checked out this material at John Lewis, it's called Aspen & for sale at £22 per metre, I got it for £6 a metre at the Standfast shop in Lancaster!
Hats off to all the great sewers on The Sewing Bee tonight!
Three good things:
1. My mums old Singer sewing machine comes to the rescue again.
2. I Just about remembered how to thread the machine!
3. Needle threaders.
I'm totally the opposite - don't do sewing now but used to make clothes for me, the children, Ray, but always just hated making curtains! Needle threaders would be good now!!
@quietpurplehaze Need,e threaders are essential. I have had mine for years & every time there it is at the bottom of the little machine drawer ....I couldn t manage without it even with my glasses on!
Ooh ! I can see it is a good old machine Pat , my old one is 40+ yrs old and is very solid ' but out of a whim I bought a new one last year !! It is working well but such a light weight in comparison and not half as stable as the old one ! Any way a lovely shot and Happy sewing Pat !
@beryl just spoke to my daughter about sewing machines, said I could have used Lydias modern one but woukdnt know where to start! They were using the old Singers on Sewing Bee last week!
Well done with the curtains. I did loads of sewing when the children were younger but don't do any now. I learnt to sew on a treadle machine which could only sew in a straight line going forward but my mother did amazing things with it.
Very creative. I don't enjoy sewing either. I have made lots of things over the years on my old Singer too and have been very pleased with the results though.
@thistle Well mine only does very plain stitch although it has an odd small foot thing in the little drawer...never used it though. I used to make very plain shift dresses when Cathy was quite small but that's about it! I never tried a treadle....you were experienced then!!
@onewing I would rather buy new really with clothes anyway! I don't mind making curtains because the material is so limited with ready made curtains. You can't beat the old Singer Babs!
I really like the pov. I hate sewing as well but remember my mom telling me to pin the pins the other way, so that it was easier to pull out by the head when the foot was too close. (Hope that makes sense!) I still have my mom's old Singer in the bottom of a cupboard but it hasn't seen the light of day for many years!
@kwiksilver Makes complete sense Gillian.....why did I never think of that....will learn from your mum now & will remember that every time now! She is right of course as you have to pull the pins out before you get too close otherwise!
You'd have been alright last week when they had the old machines. I love htis photo but I'm not mad on curtains - as ours are generally full length and way a ton.
I hate sewing. I breathed a sigh of relief when Ellen gave up dancing and I could stop making her costumes. I was terrible at it and the dance teacher is a real dragon.
