We have the same problem that everyone else is facing in our country villages.
I know more houses are needed but we are being overloaded with building work.
An agricultural area they are building 600 extra houses in the next ten years on the outskirts of our smallish village. Practically doubling the number of houses & in most peoples opinion not the type of house that will fill the need. These are big houses worth over £300,000 each, not the social affordable houses most needed by young families. There might be a few token ‘affordable’ ones round the back I suppose.
The schools are full, we have to wait ages for doctors appointments & I don’t think the houses are selling that fast. Another 500 across the road to start yet! They have promised a new school, village hall, small supermarket & apparently a MacDonalds!!
Quit a few land owners are still holding out but when they are offering much money it must be tempting!
A walk this afternoon, cold, windy & a bit wet but I did it!
Three good things:
1. Instead of being a mile away from the village one day we will be on the edge! A good thing or a bad thing?
2. I renegotiated my final bill from EE, they tried to charge me £25.65 contract fine even though I have been with them years on a sim only deal. They knocked the fine off!
3. I made biscuits this morning, the tin is full!
Pat, the same in our village - big expensive houses, although they have put a small row of smaller town houses for first time buyers but mainly big detached!
@lyndamcg@mave g. That’s what they say here, all new amenities promised but no money in the pot to build them. There was a meeting in the community centre on Thursday but we can complain all we like, no one takes any notice!
Sounds like an unfortunate situation to say the least. We see the same thing in the city -- it's absurd to see all the buildings creating a huge density problem.
Oh, this sounds so familiar. Obviously, it matters not where we live. What breaks our hearts is the fact that perfectly good farmland is being used for these projects. $$ talks!
Ditto here - they are realising that a commute to work from an outlying village is quite acceptable! The houses being built around Auckland are from $600,000! Thats ridiculous!
@beryl You’re right Beryl, it’s frightening, once the green fields are gone we never get them back! More Brown field sites are the answer for good affordable houses.
@essiesue money is the draw, I wonder if we had a field that was worth a lot of money to build on, would we be tempted...I think so perhaps although my sister in law a mile away is resisting!
We have the same problem here in Ontario - a shame and a crime - but as you said; it is awfully hard for a retiring farmer to turn down good money even though he knows it will be the end of the farm.
They should look at more brownfield sites! I really feel for the young. Housing is a big issue for them. My son lives in London and finds it hard to even rent affordably!
. So even more congestion I to the city..
Sounds like a familiar grumble the world over....too many people!
