So, I have been holidaying in Namibia. It has been a trip of highs and lows - except the temperature which was consistently high!
I have been absent from here for a while and my come-back for the time being, will be in the form of my holiday photos since I no longer have a camera at my disposal. It fell victim of the conditions which you may get a hint of in this first scene from the road from Windhoek to Sesriem.
A country of huge geological interest, bumpy roads, vast landscapes, sand and wildlife. I most certainly was unable to do it justice with my camera whilst it was working. Far less so with my camera phone which I was reduced to for the later part of the trip.
Glad to see you are safe back from Namibia - its seems such a wild and desolate area! Cameras probably don't do well with high - or very low temperatures.
good to see you :) oh dear so sorry to hear about your camera though :( love that tiny vehicle giving a sense of perspective to your image. i shall look forward to more, whether from camera or phone
I had missed your contributions! Sorry to hear about your camera - I'd class a new one as a necessity, not a luxury! Love the photo, which really captures the immensity of the country.
So sorry to hear about your camera, between the heat, rough roads and dust I guess it was asking a bit too much. Looking forward to your pictures though, it looks amazing.
What an awesome view- but so sorry to hear about the camera! Can it be cleaned and fixed? If not, I hope you can replace it eventually. Beautiful shot!
Dirt road brings back the memories! Shame about the camera... dust and heat are the main enemies, but you have probably worked that out for yourself! And if you have a digital piano you may have noted the advice to cover it and keep it away from heat sources. Next time take an old manual film camera! Mine survived slightly less extremes for a couple of years and is still alive having been mistreated for over 40 years! Oh dear I am being a smart arse... good to see you back Helen and I look forward to whatever holiday snaps you can show us.
Namibia - I also visited this country several years ago. Certainly you had great experiences there. I'm really looking forward to your pictures.
Too bad that your camera did not survive. But above all, it is important that you come back home healthy.
@fbailey thank you Felicity. It was indeed an amazing experience. But I need to go back!! @maggiemae the high temperatures were challenge to both me and my camera, as was the dust/sand. At least I survived. It is certainly a most sparsely populated country. @pistache Thanks Clare. It is good to be back. I have plenty of images - but so many missed opportunities too. @samae I am already returned from the trip - but it will take me a while to go through and smarten up some images to show. Thank you. @onewing Santa may be a little fed up of replacing my camera! Im about to send it off to see if it can be repaired - my sensible husband took out accidental damage cover on it when he purchased it for me. Remains to be seen whether the damage will be classified as such. @redandwhite thank you Catherine for your kind words. I just need to be patient for a couple of weeks to see if it can be repaired. @judithdeacon I think you are right Judith. I was expecting a lot for it to perform perfectly under the extreme conditions encountered. @olivetreeann thank you Ann. I am hoping to get the camera sorted one way or another. @Dawn many thanks Dawn. @haskar much appreciated @yrhenwr oh yes I was aware that the chances of survival were slim once I realised there was no hiding from the conditions. You over estimate me if you think I am skilled enough to take rolls of film on a holiday like this and come back with decent pictures without exposing a truck full of film. I have so much to learn. But for now, I am 100 per cent convinced that small group tours and serious photographic attempts do not combine. Holiday snaps it is! @dide Dianne thank you for your kind comment. @evalieutionspics Yes it has been quite an adventure. I will no doubt be telling more as the days go on .. @lsquared delighted that you like it Larry. @ziggy77 Thanks Jo. It is certainly vast. Difficult to convey. @carolmw Thanks Carol - these things happen . @jerome how lovely that you should find my post and time to comment. I'm pleased that we have shared similar travels - you may recognise something of what I post. @chimfa at times it was quite painful.
Everyone - thank you for your sympathies. The camera took me through the first week of the trip but let me down after day one of the safari. I am hoping to get it repaired or replaced.
@helenhall I've seen you pics, Helen.. I don't overestimate you at all. The most important kit you have is yourself and you're using it well! So right about trying to take photos when you are part of a group, I have to be alone. We all have so much to learn and when we forget that we fail.
this is one of the best travel pics ever. especially love that dust from the little car (i know it's not little) this is like a scene from a movie. sorry to hear about the camera, but it all serves us a warning should any of us go on a similar trip. huges aces on this shot, helen. i love it!
What a shame about your camera. I think I was very lucky that my cameras survived all the heat, dust and bumping around when I was in Uganda and South Africa
I had to go all the way back to find out where you were :) what lovely shots. I hope you've had a good trip, despite your camera woes (who would have thought? It wouldn't have crossed my mind). Lovely shot here though!
