Rawcliffe Ings by if1

Rawcliffe Ings

030 - A large area of land in Clifton and Rawcliffe, north of York, has been surrounded by a flood bank, with sluice gates at the north and south ends. In times of flood, water can be diverted from the river into this area, to reduce the height of the flooding in the city centre. The whole area in this shot sometimes disappears under water.

Although we had lots of rain yesterday and today, there is no danger of floods, with the river still at a very low level.

The grassland, trees, bushes and drainage channels of this area make a pleasant place for a short walk, and it was so cold and windy this afternoon that a short walk was about all I felt motivated to do!
Such a lovely scenic image. Great capture!

I know what you mean about walking in this biting cold. Incidentally, have you noticed how early the hawthorns are leafing up this year?

Thank you Lisa - I've walked across this area many times, but never noticed this alignment of trees before - perhaps 365 is beginning to make me more observant!

@collin

Yes, I'd noticed the hawthorn, and other things too, which are well in advance of normal. Last weeks sunshine has begun a real surge of growth - but what a contrast this week!

@ausgussy

Thank you - I've no doubt that we will be seeing this area again during my project.

@bkbinthecity

Thank you - the creek is part of a badly neglected drainage system which was in use before the flood relief scheme, and it now gives a number of attractive views
