Cathedral of Power by if1

Cathedral of Power

100 - Eggborough power station is one of three massive coal powered installations in the Vale of York, the others being Ferrybridge and Drax. Eggborough was built during the 1960s, and provides power to supply the equivalent of 2 million homes.

I've long thought that this shot with the power lines leading from the power station would be interesting - but this view is from a train which passes the site at 125mph, so timing is critical! I've made numerous attempts at this, with today's shot being the first to be anything like reasonable. Would have looked better with a blue sky, but that is a rare sight at the moment!
Well done to get the shot you were aiming for from the train, it works well I think and the grey skies add to the grimness.

Haha, very nice! And a rather familiar sight!

@louisefrance

Thank you Louise - The irony with this is that my return trip this evening slowed to a crawl past here, but it was far too dull and drizzly for another shot!

@lucycakes

I thought that you might recognise it! Not to long now before you can enjoy all these old familiar sights!

Despite the lack of blue skies, the green grass pretty much made up for it. It looks nice against the grey sky. Nice capture.

@marieooi

Glad you like it - although I still think it's a shame that on the day when I finally got the timing right the weather was poor.

Oh my all that smoke going into the atmosphere...I like the picture. you did well from the passing train.

@bruni

Thank you, although I have had several attempts at this! Most of what you can see going into the atmosphere is steam from the cooling towers. This power station has scrubbers on the chimneys (one on left of picture) to remove at least some of the pollution
