The Other River in York

104 - Most people associate York with the River Ouse, but there is a second smaller river that flows into the Ouse south of the city centre, and that is the River Foss. The original Roman fort was built in the V formed by the two rivers, so the River Foss is of significant historical importance.

It flows to the east of the city centre, and the area shown in today's shot was once a significant industrial zone. That industry has now gone, and has been replaced by a retail park.

The chimney in the shot is a reminder of the industrial past, but today it stands next to a Morrison's supermarket.
Now this is a super shot taken from a most unusual angle , well done.

@collin

Thank you - there is a new cycle / foot bridge over the river, and I'm on that. It links Navigation Road with the Hungate area. This whole area has and is undergoing significant redevelopment

Very cool shot Ian. We have a chiminey like this standing by itself in Edmonton. ONe of these days I will have to get down there and get a shot of it

@collin

I misled you with my earlier reply - although I went to the new bridge to take the shot, the chimney was obscured, so the shot was actually taken by the river bank about 50 yards to the east.

@marieooi

Thank you Marie. The River Foss is off the tourist trail but is quite attractive in places. You may be seeing more of it....!

@bkbinthecity

Thank you Brian. It's quite nice to see these old structures, although the supermarket on whose land it is did want to put large advertisements on it, which would have rather spoiled it. Fortunately the city council refused them permission.
