113 - Quite a few roads in York owe their origins to the Romans, and Fossgate is another of them, running south-east from the centre of the Roman city, which was roughly where the central tower of the Minster is in this shot.
The Roman road was outside the Roman city walls, and led down to a crossing over the River Foss. I'm stood on the current bridge over the River Foss, looking north-west.
Today Fossgate buildings consist mainly of shops, including several bookshops.
I used to be a Saturday girl in the little white sweet shop in the middle of this photo! It is across the road in Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate, the shortest street in York but with the longest name. I think it was called this because there used to be a little prison there. This has to be another fav Ian!
Thank you, and thank you for the fav! I know the shop that you mean. I think it's still there but I'm not sure. I'll check next time I go past, but that won't be for a few days since I'm off to visit my older daughter tomorrow.
Actually, zooming in on the original image, it still has advertisements for the press above the door, and I can see what looks like an ice cream chest just inside the door, so it looks like it's still a sweet shop and newsagents.
Looking at the buildings I would expect to see knights on horses and maidens in carriages.... but instead it's cars and bikes and people in T-shirts and jeans! It's a bizarre feeling Ian! lol
Thank you, glad you like it!
Thank you Lydia - I too would love to travel more, but at least with 365 we can get a good impression of what other parts of the world are like.
Thank you Sarah - the bookshops are one of the reasons I go there!

Yes, unfortunately the reality isn't very romantic - just hustle and bustle when it's the height of the tourist season!
Glad you are enjoying the tour - more to follow after my trip to see my elder daughter.
Thank you Caren, I'll show you more of the place after my trip to see my elder daughter.
Glad you are enjoying them - I'm just slightly nearer the city centre than Stubbs, on Foss Bridge
