However, it's all change, with preparations underway for the York Mystery Plays, which are medieval in origin and which are performed in the city every 3 to 4 years. From World War 2 until 1988, a temporary stage and seating area were created for each cycle of the plays, and the performances were an open air event with St Mary's Abbey as the backdrop.
Since then they have been held in the Theatre Royal, York Minster, and in the city streets, but this year they return to St Mary's Abbey, and construction of the temporary grandstand has begun, giving a massive change to this area. This is much grander seating than those constructed prior to 1988 - a roof over the seating is real luxury!
The plays are held throughout August, and during September the area will be restore to it's former glory.
I was surprised that it's 24 years since they were last held at St Mary's Abbey as well. I hope you are right about the weather improving!
Thank you Brian - it's certainly a spectacular event.
