159 - Bootham Bar is the major medieval entrance to the city of York from the north west. It is the only medieval entrance to the city that occupies the same site as an earlier Roman gate, although again there is nothing of Roman age visible.
It is much changed from it's original medieval form. The protruding barbican was removed from the front of this gate during Victorian times to ease the passage of traffic. The wall and protective bank to the right of the gate were removed to allow a new road route into the city, and the current short wall there is a Victorian construction.
In the background are the western towers of the Minster, and in the foreground the inevitable queue of traffic which is almost continuous here.
Thank you Louise. The best viewpoint is slightly further back when more of the Minster becomes visible, but sadly there is usually an ice cream van parked just in the wrong place, so this is the best I could manage.
What a wonderful capture! Such rich history in such a small amount of space! Would love to take a tour of it in a time machine! Where's George Orwell when ya need him?!
Great shot of the entrance way with the Minster in the background. The size of the Minster allows it to appear in many of your photos. Have you considered doing a series on the Minster?
Thank you Bob, glad you like it! - I have taken loads of shots of the Minster, and don't need much encouragement to go back again! I'll give it some thought for a bit later in the year.
I have just been looking at your collection of York photos - and I began to wonder if we had been going round the city together! I have a set (not on 365) taken on Thursday which are almost identical to yours!
Thank you Janet, that shows we've both got taste! Are your photos of York online anywhere? - it would be interesting to have a look at them if they are.
Thank you for that Janet, I've had a look, and it does look as if we covered many of the same things (including the pinnacle in the Deanery garden, which hasn't appeared in 365!). I always find it interesting to see how others see the city where I live.
@if1 You live there? Do you feel like a displaced citizen during the summer? Please feel free to add comments to the fb album - there are some places I can't remember where they are, exactly.
Yes, I came to York as a student and have stayed ever since! I normally avoid the city centre in the summer months because it is rather taken over by visitors, but this year I've been around the centre quite a bit taking photos It does feel a bit like living in a theme park at times!

Thank you Jen!
Thank you Lydia! - It's a shame I couldn't get rid of the traffic for the photo, but there's always a queue of traffic at the lights here.
Thank you, glad you like it!
Thank you, glad you like it! There is indeed a lot of history in a small area here!
Thank you Michele!
Thank you Brian, it is pretty impressive!
Thank you Marie, glad you like it!
Thank you Roslyn, glad you like it! - It's true that we would struggle to build anything like this now!
Thank you Lynne. There are a couple of shots of the Shambles earlier in my project - http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-08 and http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-09 and I may get there again later in the year. In the summer it's just far too busy to get much of a picture there.

Thank you Dominique, glad you like it! - more history shots to follow soon!

Thank you Tin, I'm pleased that you like it!
