Back to where we started! by if1

Back to where we started!

197 - Around 7 weeks ago I began a series of shots of York's city walls at Walmgate Bar, with a look at it's Barbican ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-30). There have been a few distractions along the way, but here, after 22 shots of the walls and other views from the walls, we are back to where we started, just over 100 yards from yesterday's shot, with a shot of the city side of Walmgate Bar.

On this side of the Bar we have an Elizabethan house built over the gateway around 1580. At present it is supported with temporary scaffolding, but it's restoration is due to begin soon.

It has been used for many purposes over the centuries.

When I moved to York in 1970 it was used by a bookshop to house antiquarian books. Following that it was used as a practice room for a band. More recently it has housed a coffee shop - a very useful facility for those completing the walk of almost 3 miles around the walls!
Well done and thanks for completing your fascinating journey!

Over the years Walmgate Bar has been through the wars ---literally -- and is the one I'm most familiar with. I endorse what Louise has said, thanks for completing this journey, it has been really interesting.

Thank you Ian, I have certain enjoyed this tour and learnt a lot, living in Australia we don't have the historical buildings that you have over there, so it is fantastic to see what it is like half a world away....

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the tour! I don't think it will be long before I'm back on the history trail, but I'm going to try something different for a few days.

@roslynjoy

Thank you Roslyn - I sometimes think we have so much history that we take it for granted and it fades into the background. This tour has been good for me too!
