206 - York continues to suffer from flooding. Here the view is along Skeldergate, which runs parallel with the river. There are many refurbished and newer properties in this area, including apartments, offices, a hotel, and sheltered accommodation for the elderly. Sadly, their only access today is by boat.
The important thing to remember is that the flooding in York is very localised, and that the number of properties affected is quite small - still a disaster for those affected, but nowhere near as bad as the situation thirty years ago before the flood defences were built, when many hundreds of houses could be affected.
The flood peaked this morning with a height of 5.07 metres above normal, which makes it the second highest flood ever recorded, the highest being 5.40 metres in November 2000. There has been very little rain yesterday and today, and the flood has already receded a few cms, so hopefully the worst is over and the clean up can begin.
Thank you Roslyn - the situation is horrible, but I can't help going out to record it. I've some old transparencies from the 1978/9 floods, before the flood defences were built, and then the military were called in to rescue people from their houses. At least it's not that bad now.
We , in Holland, are familiar with this kind of disasters and we still fight against it. No matter of there are a few , if it`s happen to you, you`re in trouble. Hope it soon will be gone
Thank you Pyrrhula, I agree, for those affected it is a disaster. The water has now dropped by over a metre, so it won't be long before the river is back in it's channel.
So devastating when water gets in!
Thank you Lesley - it is a terrible time for those directly affected.
Thank you, glad you like the picture. I will be sharing a bit more about the floods in the next couple of days
Thank you Bob - we have had a really wet summer, and so far autumn is no better.
Thank you Helen - it might look like Venice, but I'm not sure you would want a ride in a gondola in water as dirty as this!
Thank You Sarah, good of you to remember us.
Thank you Brian. It has been almost dry for the last couple of days and the water has already dropped by over half a metre.
Thank you Brian - it's a small area but still devastating for those unfortunate enough to be affected.
Thank you Bulldog - when you see water in the streets like this, it does make you think.
Thank you Roslyn - the situation is horrible, but I can't help going out to record it. I've some old transparencies from the 1978/9 floods, before the flood defences were built, and then the military were called in to rescue people from their houses. At least it's not that bad now.
Thank you Caren - it's far less serious than before the flood defences were built, but still awful for those affected.
Thank you Debra - it isn't at all nice for those who live in the areas affected.
Thank you Pyrrhula, I agree, for those affected it is a disaster. The water has now dropped by over a metre, so it won't be long before the river is back in it's channel.

Thank you Kristin - it does look deserted, but there was quite a crowd behind me!
