Floods in Skeldergate

206 - York continues to suffer from flooding. Here the view is along Skeldergate, which runs parallel with the river. There are many refurbished and newer properties in this area, including apartments, offices, a hotel, and sheltered accommodation for the elderly. Sadly, their only access today is by boat.

The important thing to remember is that the flooding in York is very localised, and that the number of properties affected is quite small - still a disaster for those affected, but nowhere near as bad as the situation thirty years ago before the flood defences were built, when many hundreds of houses could be affected.

The flood peaked this morning with a height of 5.07 metres above normal, which makes it the second highest flood ever recorded, the highest being 5.40 metres in November 2000. There has been very little rain yesterday and today, and the flood has already receded a few cms, so hopefully the worst is over and the clean up can begin.
A great picture but a terrible time.

Bob
Great picture but a bad flood. The weather seems to be acting up all over this year.

Our own Venice in the north! I agree @lellie great pic, but sad for those affected.

been thinking of you when the news appears on TV.
So devastating when water gets in!
September 27th, 2012

September 28th, 2012
A truly shocking but beautiful shot..
September 28th, 2012
a great shot of an awful situation....
September 28th, 2012
That's a great shot...so sorry for the situation. I'm glad it's localized and that the whole town isn't suffering.
September 28th, 2012
Gosh, what an awful sight!
September 28th, 2012
@lellie

Thank you Lesley - it is a terrible time for those directly affected.

@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob - we have had a really wet summer, and so far autumn is no better.
September 28th, 2012
@shweetheart

Thank you Helen - it might look like Venice, but I'm not sure you would want a ride in a gondola in water as dirty as this!

@sarah19

Thank You Sarah, good of you to remember us.

@brianl

Thank you Brian. It has been almost dry for the last couple of days and the water has already dropped by over half a metre.
September 28th, 2012
@bkbinthecity

Thank you Brian - it's a small area but still devastating for those unfortunate enough to be affected.

@gphelps5

Thank you Bulldog - when you see water in the streets like this, it does make you think.

@roslynjoy

Thank you Roslyn - the situation is horrible, but I can't help going out to record it. I've some old transparencies from the 1978/9 floods, before the flood defences were built, and then the military were called in to rescue people from their houses. At least it's not that bad now.
September 28th, 2012
@clmiller

Thank you Caren - it's far less serious than before the flood defences were built, but still awful for those affected.
September 28th, 2012
@doodlerdeb

Thank you Debra - it isn't at all nice for those who live in the areas affected.
September 28th, 2012
We , in Holland, are familiar with this kind of disasters and we still fight against it. No matter of there are a few , if it`s happen to you, you`re in trouble. Hope it soon will be gone
September 28th, 2012
another great shot, Ian. I think I know more about York than I do ablut my own town! Thank you for thecommentaries along with all the amazing photos!
September 29th, 2012
@pyrrhula

Thank you Pyrrhula, I agree, for those affected it is a disaster. The water has now dropped by over a metre, so it won't be long before the river is back in it's channel.

Beautiful photo, sad event. There is a melancholy and empty feel to this even if you don't know what's going on!
September 30th, 2012
Feels so empty and sad. Great capture.
