Priory and Castle by if1

Priory and Castle

215 - I had planned another panorama over Lancaster as my final shot uploaded from my visit there, but this time looking towards the Castle and Priory, but sadly the weather was against me, so here is a collage of the Priory tower and part of the Castle.

Both buildings are well worth a visit. They are built where the original Roman settlement is thought to have been, and they tower over the town.

The first church was thought to have been built here in the sixth century, and a Saxon doorway can still be seen in the current church. Since then the church has grown in size and been altered many times. It has some very attractive stained glass.

The castle has also grown and developed since it was first built in the 12th century. Until 2011 much of it was used as a prison, and a court is still held in another part of the building. A conducted tour of the building is available and well worth the time.

Lancaster is a fascinating town with much to see and do, and I very much enjoyed my visit.

Love this! We've visited here a few times and loved it!
Once we went to the Sunday service at the Priory....the local girls school recorder group were playing at one point in the service ...and when their rehearsed pieces didn't last as long as expected we found ourselves going forward for communion to 'Nellie the Elephant' much to the amusement of ourselves and some of the officiating clergy! Always brings a smile!!!!
