227 - Clifton Green is situated about a mile north-west of York Minster. Once the heart of a small village outside York, it has been swallowed up by the expansion of the city, but remarkably it still looks like a rural area.
When my children were young, horses were kept on Clifton Green during the summer to keep the grass trimmed, and the ornate covered drinking trough for them still survives.
The main A19 road north from the city runs past it's north-eastern side, and a main road to a 1960's bridge over the River Ouse runs past it's north-western side. making this far from a tranquil place today.
However, if you ignore the traffic noise, and wait patiently for a gap in the flow of traffic, this semi rural view is still possible!
Thank you all for your very kind comments - but I must stress that you are seeing the Green at it's best. More normally there would be a queue of traffic in front of the houses in the distance, and in front of the rail in the foreground, so it is very much urban. But this glimpse at a quiet moment indicates what a pretty place Clifton must have been as a village many years ago.
