260 - One of York's best known tourist attractions is the Minster, a massive church built of limestone, highlighted here by afternoon sun which brings out the rich creamy colour of the stone.
An ascent to the top of the central tower gives a marvellous panorama over the Minster itself, the city, and far beyond on a day with clear visibility.
The climb is not for the faint hearted. There are 275 steps to climb a height of 230 feet, much of them along narrow staircases.
The climb is split into two parts. A staircase in the South Transept (in the turret at the right hand side of the left hand image) brings you to an open walkway along the edge of the roof of the transept (where the people are in the left hand shot), before a final climb of the central tower itself (right hand shot). The south transept roof walk is just visible at the bottom right of the right hand image.
The panoramic views at both the south transept roof height and from the central tower itself are spectacular. It's certainly well worth the effort!
Thank you - the Minster is an excellent place to look round. I've actually got several hundred shots of the inside and outside, but there is always something new to see and shoot!
Thank you Janet - If you are in York on a day with good visibility it is well worth the climb to enjoy the view from the top. You can identify places up to about 30 miles away!
Thank you Ladyjane - I only took about 4 shots as I was walking past. The light was ideal for capturing the tower. I didn't go up this time but I have done before and I have quite a collection of shots of the view from the top.
Thank you Brian, I'm sure you would enjoy a look round! I haven't included any interior shots of the Minster yet, so I will have to try and get in there and get some shots to post at some point.
Thank you Heather, glad you like it.
