262 - Bad weather and flooding caused some disruption to train services yesterday evening, so my return to York was interrupted at Doncaster. Instead of a 10 minute wait between trains, there was an hour, so I decided to go for a walk and look at the Christmas lights and illuminated buildings around the town centre.
North of the town centre is Doncaster Minster, which is now illuminated at night and is a magnificent sight.
Doncaster Minster was designed by renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, and was completed in 1858. It is a magnificent example of Victorian Gothic architecture. This building replaced a 12th century Norman building which was destroyed by fire in 1853.
Unfortunately I didn't have a tripod with me, so this was a hand held shot, with a fairly long exposure, and the result isn't as sharp as it could have been, but I did like the lighting, so I wanted to share it with you.
You know I lived nearby for five years and yet never got to Doncaster, how stupid! This is such a beautiful building and you've taken such a lovely shot of it. Love the effect the lights have on the architecture!
Thank you Kd - it was a fun experiment, and I did take quite a few shots, not all of which were very sharp, but I was pleased to get this one and a few others that were ok.
Triple thanks here!
To Sir George Gilbert Scott for designing another superb Minster.
To whoever did the beautiful floodlighting
and to Ian for a great photo of it!
