Animal Drinking Trough by if1

Animal Drinking Trough

308 - Two days ago I shared a shot of the building now used as a barber shop beside Clifton Green, and today I'm including a shot of the only other building on the Green, the animal drinking trough. The trough has a high level section for cows and horses and a low level section for dogs, and there is a canopy above.

In 1883, a local woman, Maria Husband, formed the 'York Band of Mercy or Juvenile Society for the Promotion of Kindness to Animals'. She was concerned that cattle were being driven to market without anywhere to stop for a drink, after the pond that existed here was declared insanitary. She organised fundraising, the building and subsequent maintenance of the trough and canopy.

Until recently it was still used by horses kept on the Green during summer months. My oldest daughter used to love going to see the horses as a young child.

The trough and canopy became Grade 2 listed buildings in 1983, and they still enhance the Green by their presence.
Good shot. Thanks for all the interesting info.

@if1 yes, I've found this is very rewarding - already the 365 project has taught me to think much more about what's behind my photos.

This drinking trough looks to be in a residental area or in a park. I enjoyed reading the history of this structure and the influence of a wonderful lady looking out for the animals.

@bruni

Thank you Bruni, it's on what would once have been a village green, but is now surrounded by very busy roads. It's a noisy spot, but does still look quite attractive.
