344 - York has for many years seen itself as a cycling city. Sadly, an increase in road traffic and an aggressive approach by a small but dangerous minority of motorists has made cycling on the roads of York a more unpleasant and risky experience.
Fortunately, there are now a number of off road routes in and around the city, and they link into the national cycle network. Disused railway lines, riverside paths and quiet lanes form a pleasant selection of routes for both cyclists and walkers.
I included a collage of one of the network markers last month ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2013-01-23). Here, a little further north, beside a quiet lane to Overton Village, where the cycle route leaves the lane and runs beside a small beck, is this attractive weather vane. This full colour image shows what a grey day it was today!
What a cool weathervane, cycling is a growing means of transport and recreation here but should be considered an amazingly dangerous one on our roads....even with the protection a car offers we have horrid statistics.
Nice. I'm too chicken to go cycling since we moved here and there isn't the fraction of the traffic on our road as there is on most UK roads. They just go too fast!
Makes a good silhouette and a good capture. I rarely cycle in the UK as it seems to be too dangerous on too many roads here. Sad state of affairs really.
I said once before in a comment that we have new bikes routes in town but they are too close to the traffic. sofar I've not seen them being in use. it was safer before when they were allowed to ride their bike on the tretuar. your weathervan looks great in this silhouette form.
Beautiful weathervane nicely captured. Don`t you`ve an union/association of cyclist ?
In our country the law says : by a collision with a motor driving object and a cyclist the driver always is to blame and have to pay the damage by one reason only. He`s stronger and faster so he have to take care and have to prevent the accident
Nicely silhouetted against the grey sky. I've just been to a talk at St Neots camera club by Gavin Hoey. Excellent! No time to go into detail now but he'd be worth googling as he does free instruction videos and challenges on line.
Thank you all for your encouragement. It is a shame that the roads are not safer for cyclists, but sadly part of the problem is the behaviour of some cyclists, who show no respect for other road users, so we have a minority of problem cyclists and a minority of problem motorists who cause problems for the sensible majority.
@pyrrhula - there has been discussion here about making motorists responsible for any accidents, but so far no action. There are cycling pressure groups, and some progress is being made to segregate cyclists from other forms of transport, but change will take time.
@busylady - I've had a look at Gavin Hoey online and there does look to be some interesting guides and ideas - I will be looking at him again, thank you for the tip!

Thank you Ann - I actually had to lighten the sky to make the weather vane stand out, since it was such a grey day!
Thank you Brian - I hope you enjoy your cycle ride. I certainly loved cycling when I was younger!
But we are slowly getting there!
