Tildi took me about 6 miles this morning through Danesmead Wood, MIllennium Fields and across the bridge to Rowntree Park. I saw only 1 Speckled Wood, no other butterflies.
Heading back home she wanted to go round MIllennium Fields again. I'm very well trained so followed...
I found some newly open Birdsfoot Trefoil. Dare I hope for Common Blue this year?
Then more Dovesfoot Cranesbill, the larval food of Brown Argus Butterflies. They'd moved onto the field in very low numbers about 6 or 7 years ago and I saw none in the heat of 2022.
Double dare I hope that the one I saw last month won't be the only one?
And there it was, a tiny butterfly that flitters around like a minute grey moth. It kindly settled with wings open - was a bit nippy - and allowed me to photograph its brown upper wings from above.
An exciting day because my Holly Blue larvae had produced a surprise too - but that's maybe for tomorrow if I don't find anything else.

How nicely focused - and encouraging. Until you mention it I hadn't realized how many more of the little common blues I use to see a few years ago. Sad.
